Bobcat Spikers Drop Hard-Fought Match to Utah Valley

“We played much better than what we did this weekend,” said MSU head coach Miya Malauulu. “I thought Sarah (Allen) did a good job with the offense.
“And, even though we made fewer hitting errors, we made them at inopportune moments in the match,” Malauulu added. “We’ll keep working hard. We’re making progress.”
Montana State (1-15) was paced by Patti Anderson and Nicole Grypiuk- both of which posted career-high kills. Anderson ended the match with 16 kills and 18 digs, while Grypiuk finished with 12 kills, a .458 attack mark and four blocks.
Junior Laura Viren broke out of a mini slump with 12 kills and 14 digs to register her sixth double-double of the season. Allen dished out 47 assists and added nine digs.
The match featured 27 ties and nine lead changes.
Montana State opened the match pulling away from a 25-25 score with a 5-2 run to win the first set following a Utah Valley (7-5) hitting error.
In the second stanza, MSU battled back from a 26-21 deficit with a 5-1 run to close to within 27-26, but the Wolverines finished out the game on a 3-1 run.
The third game featured eight ties. UVS held a 26-24 margin following a kill by Anderson. Utah Valley closed out the game with four straight points.
The final game of the match had 13 ties. The Wolverines pulled away from a 25-25 tie, and won the match on a service ace.
“Utah Valley is a good club,” Malauulu said. “They’ve beaten three Big Sky teams. I was happy with the way we competed, tonight.”
UVS had four players in double-figure kills, led by Camie Manwill with 21 kills and 12 digs.
MSU will host Montana, Friday night at 5:30 p.m., in Shroyer Gym.
