Good football teams work like this, typically. After two weeks of big offensive numbers, Montana State ran into a stingy Weber State defense and some rain at Stewart Stadium in Ogden Saturday, but the Bobcat defense scored 14 points itself to lead MSU to a 21-5 win over Weber State to open Big Sky play. The Bobcats face a fellow Big Sky charter member for the second straight week, and face a school located on I-15 for the third of what will be four straight weeks. ISU coach John Zamberlin led Central Washington to a 31-16 whipping of the Bobcats in 2002.

Return Remarks
Kory Austin’s 85-yard punt return against Dixie State marked the first time since Nov. 15, 2003, that the Bobcats returned a punt for a touchdown. Austin is sixth in the nation with 17.3 yards per return.

The No-Return Policy
On Nov. 22, 2003, Corey Smith returned the opening kickoff of the Cat-Griz game for a touchdown which spurred the Bobcats to a 27-20 win and the Big Sky title. MSU has not returned a kickoff for a touchdown since then, a streak that stands at 39 games. The Bobcats have not allowed a punt return for a touchdown in 48 straight games (since Cal Poly, 2003) or a kickoff return in 69 straight contests.

Offensively there were two or three important drives in the game where we put everything together. It seemed that when everybody got their assignment right we executed fine. Weber turned the heat up (defensively), and we didn’t handle it as well as we need to. The positives were the key drives in the second and third quarters that flipped the field, and getting a touchdown on the board (offensively) when Weber didn’t.”

That’s going to be important, especially for the offense, because we need to get some work done this week.”
...Idaho State: “Idaho State’s score against Eastern Washington looked decisive, but each team had right around 400 yards, and watching it on tape I saw two teams that battled it out. Mistakes killed Idaho State, the turnovers, and a couple big plays for Eastern. In some ways it’s the same view we had last week of Weber State, where they hadn’t won but they had played much better than the scores indicated. Idaho State is a good team. They have great skill on offense, their receivers are terrific. They play two quarterbacks, they’re looking for the right mix there, but we’re very, very impressed with their skill position guys. Defensively they’re very, very solid. They play a base concept, they play it well, and they’re very well coached.”
