Eastern Washington Out-Lasts Bobcat Spikers

The match was decided in the opening game.
Eastern Washington (3-9, 2-1) rallied from six game points, scoring the final three points of the set for a 34-32 win.
The win propelled the Eagles to a 34-32, 30-19, 30-24 victory over Montana State (1-13, 0-3), Thursday night in Shroyer Gym.
“It might sound like a broken record, but we’ve been in these situations, and are having a hard time closing out a game,” said MSU head coach Miya Malauulu. “Losing the first game took the wind out of our sails, but I’m glad they fought back in the third game.”
Following the opening game, Eastern Washington cruised to the second set victory by virtue of out-hitting the Bobcats .265 to .100.
In the final set, MSU held four-point leads on two occasions, before EWU took control at 21-all with four unanswered points to win the match.
Montana State was led in the loss by Nicole Grypiuk with a team-high 11 kills. Patti Anderson and Monique Schaal added to the offense with nine and seven kills, respectively.
“Nicole and Monique did a great job,” Malauulu said. “We’ll keep working hard until we can figure out how to get over the hump. Winning is a mindset we need to find.”
Defensively, three Bobcats reached double-digit digs, including Meghan Albiston 15, Anderson 12 and Laura Viren 10. Kaytlin Van Burger notched a match-high six blocks.
Eastern Washington was paced by Hayley Hills with 16 kills and six digs.
MSU will host Portland State on Saturday night in Shroyer Gym.
