Bobcat senior Kory Austin earned Big Sky Special Teams Player of the Week honors on Saturday, MSU's first weekly award winner of the season and Austin's first such award. A 5-11, 184-lb senior from Sacramento, Calif., Austin registered two of the longest plays in school history in a span of less than four minutes in the Bobcats’ 61-7 victory over Dixie State.

Montana State opens its conference Saturday against Weber State. The game is Homecoming for the Wildcats. Weber State is currently 0-2 on the season, losing twice on the road; first to Boise State 7-56 opening weekend and to Cal Poly last weekend 19-47. The game is the conference opener for both teams.

After two tough road losses last week, the ‘Cats return home to try for their first conference win this week. MSU plays three matches in five days this week taking on two conference foes and one non-conference opponent. Eastern Washington comes to town with a 2-9 record; their wins coming against Colgate and Idaho State. Portland State sits at 8-4 which includes two home conference wins against Weber State and Idaho State. The following Monday the ‘Cats face Utah Valley State, a 5-5 team coming off a four match losing streak. Utah Valley State is an independent D-I school from Orem, Utah.

The Montana State men’s and women’s cross country teams opened their 2007 season with a solid effort in the 26th annual MSU Invitational, Saturday morning at Bridger Creek Golf Course. The Bobcat men placed fourth overall, while the Montana State women were seventh.

Women’s Tennis
The MSU women’s tennis team competed at the University of Wyoming Fall Invitational, this weekend in Laramie. The Bobcats dominated play as true-freshman Stephanie Jasper won the Gold Singles (top bracket) with a 7-6, 2-6, 6-3 win over Tabatha Knop of Northern Colorado. MSU’s Laura Villegas won the Brown Singles bracket with a 6-1, 7-6 victory over UNC’s Manuela Santos. The Bobcats topped its tournament play as Ali Griffin won the White Singles bracket with a straight set 6-2, 6-3 win over Wyoming’s Michelle Brown. In doubles action, Villegas and Griffin were defeated in the championship match of the Gold bracket, while Jasper and Nuria Hernandez combined to win the back-draw. MSU’s sister act of Remy and Lisa Clark finished fourth in the Brown bracket.
“We had a tremendous opening weekend,” said Bobcat women’s coach Denise Albrecht. “The girls played very well and we’re excited about the future and potential of this team.”
