Bobcat Harriers Host 26th MSU Invitational

The men’s 5-mile event will start at 9 a.m., followed by the women’s 3-mile race at 9:45 a.m. Competing teams include MSU, Montana, Idaho State, Weber State, Utah State, Utah, Utah Valley State, Wyoming, MSU-Billings, Carroll College, Rocky Mountain College and Westminster.
“This is going to be one of the biggest and best races we’ve hosted in quite awhile,” said MSU head coach Dale Kennedy. “A lot of the teams competing are ranked in the NCAA Mountain Region.”
The highest ranked squad will be the Weber State women’s contingent. The Wildcats are ranked 30th in the nation and fourth in the most recent Mountain Region poll. WSU is followed in the region by Montana, 7th, Utah 10th, Utah State, 13th, and Wyoming 14th.
“It’s a tough women’s field,” Kennedy said. “Our top three kids are very solid and running well, and it will be interesting to see how our younger kids compete at the collegiate level.”
The Bobcat women will be led by Elisabeth Driscoll, a three-time All-Big Sky Conference performer. Seniors Carrie Gottschalk and Kayla Larson will also look to contribute.
Weber State is also the favorite on the men’s side. WSU is ranked fifth in the region, and are followed by Wyoming, 8th, Utah State, 9th, Montana State 13th, Montana 14th, and Idaho State, 15th.
“Weber State was picked second in the Big Sky Coaches Poll and should be the favorite to win on Saturday,” Kennedy said. “There are a bunch of outstanding individual runners, as well, and look for Nick Atwood and Matt Adams of MSU to be in the thick of things.”
The race will also serve as the annual ‘Cat-Griz dual. The men’s rivalry dates back to 1959. Last fall, the Bobcat men captured the dual team title 22-33, while the Lady Griz won 22-37.
