“We out-blocked them and were pretty much even-up in digs, but we just made too many unforced errors and it cost us the match,” said MSU head coach Miya Malauulu. “We didn’t establish any level of consistency and we made bad choices.”
Northern Arizona (6-5, 1-0) was paced by Alex Fell with 12 kills and eight digs. As a team, the Lumberjacks hit .258 from the floor.
Montana State (1-11, 0-1) trailed 27-26 in the opening stanza, before NAU rattled off three straight points for the victory.
In the second, the Bobcats took an early 6-5 lead, before Northern Arizona scored eight unanswered points. In the final set, the Lumberjacks got off to a quick start and out-hit MSU .250 to -.125 to take the match.
The Bobcats were led by Laura Viren with 12 kills, nine digs and two blocks, while Kaytlin Van Burger added seven kills, a .375 attack mark and four blocks. Despite hitting -.238 from the field, senior Patti Anderson added nine kills and a team-high 13 digs.
Montana State will play at Northern Colorado on Saturday.
