The Montana State volleyball team will open its 2007 Big Sky Conference schedule on the road this week. The Bobcats will open at Northern Arizona, Thursday, in Flagstaff. Northern Arizona is currently 5-5 overall and are coming off a 3-0 mark at its own tournament, last weekend. The Lumberjacks are led by Kim Babcock, who was recently named Big Sky Conference Player of the Week. Babcock is averaging 5.22 kills and 2.70 digs per game, while setter Kelly Verboom is dishing out 11.08 assists and adding 1.73 digs per contest. The Bobcats swept Northern Arizona last fall and have won two straight in the Rolle Activity Center. MSU currently has five-match win streak against the Lumberjacks. Northern Colorado is 2-8 overall, after posting a 0-3 mark last weekend. The Bears have posted victories over Saint Francis and Cal-Riverside. UNC is paced this fall by Dulcie Stone, a 5-10 senior outside hitter, who is averaging 3.03 kills and 2.72 digs per game. Last season, in its first full year of Big Sky competition, the Bears swept the Bobcats. The all-time series record between Northern Colorado and Montana State stands a t 2-2.
Cat Tracks:
MSU snapped its nine-match losing streak with a 3-0 win over North Florida....Against UNF, the ‘Cats were led by Laura Viren with 18 kills and ten digs. Viren went 18-1-34 from the field...Viren was named to her third straight preseason all-tournament team and finished with three double-doubles...Patti Anderson posted a career-high 14 kills against Florida Atlantic...Senior transfer Monique Schaal posted a career-best 13 kills in MSU’s loss to UCF. Schaal finished the match with a .370 attack mark and three blocks…MSU broke out of its hitting slump with a hefty .394 attack mark against UNF as MSU recorded only eight hitting errors in 104 attempts.
The Week That Was:
The Bobcats went 1-3 at the university of Central Florida Invitational, last weekend in Orlando. MSU opened the invitational with a 30-23, 30-21, 30-22 setback to previously undefeated Central Michigan. The Bobcats hit .116 for the match, depsite opening the first game with a .429 attack mark. Junior Laura Viren guided Montana State with nine kills and four digs. In its second match, Florida Atlantic handed the Bobcats a 30-18, 30-22, 31-33, 30-26 decision. Viren and Patti Anderson paced MSU with 15 and 14 kills, respectively. MSU snapped its nine-match losing streak with a 30-27, 30-22, 30-23 victory over North Florida. Viren exploded for 18 kills, while hitting .500 from the field. She also added ten digs. Anderson also posted a double-double with 12 kills and 11 digs. As a team, the Bobcats hit a season-high .394 from the floor. In the finale’s of the tournament against host Central Florida, the Knights won a hard-fought 29-31, 31-29, 30-22, 29-31, 15-9 decision. Three Bobcats reached double-figures, including senior transfer Monique Schaal, who posted a career-best 13 kills, while notching a .370 attack mark. For the second straight match, Viren and Anderson each notched double-doubles.
Getting On Track:
The Bobcat offense finally got on track over the weekend. As a team, MSU hit .227 over the course of four matches. Montana State entered the UCF Invitational hitting under .100 from the floor. MSU posted a season-high .394 attack mark (49-8-104) against North Florida, as five players hit .300 or higher.
Gotta Dig It:
Montana State is averaging 15.19 digs per game. The Bobcats are led this season by freshman libero Meghan Albiston, who is averaging 4.35 saves per game. Last weekend, the Idaho Falls native averaged 3.53 digs per game, including a UCF Invitational high 24 saves against Central Florida. Also helping the ‘Cats defensively are Patti Anderson (2.73), Laura Viren (2.70) and Sarah Allen (2.08).
Fab Five:
The Bobcats have played five freshmen during the fall preseason schedule. Redshirt freshman Wendy Doutre is second on the team with a .167 attack mark, while averaging 2.34 kills per outing. Doutre came into game four against Central Florida and exploded for 9 kills and a .400 attack mark. Libero Meghan Albiston is third in the Big Sky averaging 4.35 digs per game, while true-freshman Demi Dlouhy is first on the squad averaging .92 blocks per contest. True-freshman Rachelle Allen has played in 32 games and is averaging 1.66 digs per game. Freshman setter Maria Peterson has played in 13 games and has dished out nine assists.
Seeing Double:
Laura Viren leads the squad with four double-doubles.
Looking Ahead:
Following the its Big Sky opener at Northern Arizona and Northern Colorado, the Bobcats will face a five-match home-stand. MSU’s first league home match will be Sept. 20 against Eastern Washington. The Bobcats will complete the weekend with Portland State on Sept. 22. Montana State thens plays a non-conference match against Utah Valley State, Sept. 24, before hosting Montana and Sacramento State.
