Bobcat Game Notes vs. Dixie State

The long-awaited home debut of Montana State’s first-year head coach Rob is at hand, but it comes with a major cautionary tale. The Bobcats face a Dixie State squad which won just once last year, its first season as a four-year college, but the Rebels have roared to a 2-1 start this season and come to Bozeman with three games - two more than the ‘Cats - under their belts. Dixie State has allowed just 273.7 yards a game, and should test a Bobcat offense that compiled 402 yards at Texas A&M.

The ‘Cats are 24-10 in the first home game of the season at 11th and Kagy. • MSU is 14-6 in the first home game of the season in Bobcat Stadium after opening the season with at least one road loss. • In the 29 seasons from 1923 to 1951, Montana State opened the season 10 times against teams from Utah. From 1952 to 2006, that happened only once, 1982, when the Utes beat MSU 30-12.

Kyle Field’s crowd of 79,000+ became the largest ever to watch a Bobcat football game, and was the largest in which Montana State has ever played. • The crowd of 79,000 Aggie fans in Kyle Field eclipsed by about four thousand the total number of fans that watched Rob Ash’s final two Drake teams over the course of the 2005 and ‘06 seasons. • MSU’s two-game winning streak at NAU’s Walkup Skydome is its first ever, and the four-game winning streak against the Jacks is the longest ever. • Montana State’s 45-0 loss to UC Davis in 2006 was the team’s second-worst home defeat since Bobcat Stadium was remodeled in 1997 (UM, 49-3, 1999), and was the first shutout at home since losing to Idaho 34-0 in 1985. • The crowd of 12,087 for UC Davis marked the fifth-largest for a non-conference game in school history, and the paid crowd of 14,117 for Portland State was MSU’s second-largest Homecoming crowd. • Bobcat Stadium has hosted 14 consecutive home crowds of at least 12,000.

Montana State was a different team on the road than at home last year. MSU averaged 378.6 yards and 25.6 points a game on the road, gaining 289.0 yards and 16.6 points in home games. Those numbers were skewed even further by Montana holding the ‘Cats to 196 yards in the regular season finale at Missoula.

MSU finished only one season in the last five with more takeaways than turnovers.
The No-Return Policy
On Nov. 22, 2003, Corey Smith returned the opening kickoff of the Cat-Griz game for a touchdown which spurred the Bobcats to a 27-20 win and the Big Sky title. Since then, MSU has not returned a punt or kickoff for a touchdown, a streak that stands at 37 games. The Bobcats have not allowed a punt return for a touchdown in 46 straight games (since Cal Poly, 2003) or a kickoff return in 67 straight contests.

...the open week: “As the week went on, it was apparent that we were more beat up than I thought, chronic soreness and bumps and bruises. When we started to hit Tuesday and Wednesday in practice those things really showed up, so it’s probably a good thing we didn’t play on Saturday. From a teaching standpoint, we didn’t get as much accomplished as I’d hoped. We had to back off in practice because of injuries, and the motivation just wasn’t there. It was a tough situation, going though a long camp and getting to a very high level of focus for a big game, then turning around and having the bottom fall out because there was no game last week. Even on Sunday I noticed that just having an opponent this week the blood is starting to flow again and the life is back in the team again.”
...coaching his first home game at MSU: “All these are firsts for me. I’m really excited about playing a game at home. I want to see the stadium filled with people, and I want to see the whole event that surrounds the game. I’m excited for the times we play at home, whether it’s an opener or not. This one will be special because it’s my first chance to coach here, but I’m sensing the guys are excited about playing at home, very much so, because they know they get tremendous support here.”
...Dixie State: “Defensively they play from a 3-4 concept, and they blitz from every angle and bring a lot of different people. We’re going to have to work all week on line games and movement and stunts. Offensively they’re balanced. You have to be ready to defend the run and the pass. There are a lot of concepts that are solid, I like what I see them doing. It’s similar to what we run.”
