MHP Trooper to Escort Ash

Rob Ash and his coaching staff won't be alone in making their debut on the Bobcat Stadium sidelines this weekend. A Montana Highway Patrol Trooper will be stationed with Ash, MSU's first-year head coach, throughout the 2007 season, the Montana Highway Patrol and Bobcat Athletics announced Tuesday.
The patrol Trooper's presence on the Bobcat sidelines comes in conjunction with the Highway Patrol's Montana Hope Project, which aids critically or chronically ill children in the Treasure State. A Montana Hope Project Recipient family will be on the field before the game. "We're looking to build a partnership with Montana State University and Bobcat Athletics that benefits all parties, along with children in the state that need our help," Capt. Tom Butler said. "We also hope this aids our recruitment and retention of current and future Troopers."
The MHP assigns a volunteer from the ranks each week, according to Capt. Butler. The assignments are based on involvement in the Patrol's outreach programs, rating within the Patrol, and demeanor and bearing in uniform. Butler, a 1991 MSU graduate who worked as an Athletic Trainer during his undergraduate years, will serve as Ash's escort during the Dixie State game on Saturday. Troopers working games are off duty and are not compensated for the time spent at or traveling to and from the game.
"This adds to the pageantry of Bobcat Football, and also benefits a very worthy cause," said MSU Athletic Director Peter Fields. "This is a tradition in many parts of the country, and we didn't want to pass on the opportunity to honor these outstanding public servants while also increasing the awareness of the Montana Hope Project."
