Texas A&M Sweeps ‘Cats for Holiday Inn Classic Title

The Aggies (6-0) remained undefeated behind the effort of sophomore outside hitter Sarah Ammerman, who connected for 14 kills and a .394 attack mark en route to being named tournament MVP.
Montana State (0-7) went toe-to-toe with Texas A&M on the defensive side of the net; however, the Aggies held a commanding .396 to .099 advantage in hitting percentage.
“We’re not a team that’s going to overpower anyone,” Malauulu said. “However, I’ll put our heart up against anyone. Our defense is going to keep us in matches, and we’ll find a way to get points.
“I was excited that Laura (Viren) had a great outing against a very good team,” Malauulu said. “We’re still trying to find our identity.”
Viren, a 6-foot outside hitter from Prior Lake, Minn., led the Bobcats with 11 kills and seven digs, while hitting .258 from the field.
True-freshman Rachelle Allen paced the Bobcats with a team-high eight digs, while setter Sarah Allen dished out 29 assists and five digs. Junior middle blocker Kaytlin Van Burger led MSU at the net with two blocks.
For her efforts, Viren was named to the Holiday Inn Classic All-Tournament team.
Other members of the all-tournament team included Ammerman, Jillian Phillips, Texas A&M; Kristin Schevikhoven, Texas A&M; Maureen Perez, Washington State, Brittany Johnson, Washington State; and Amanda Nielson, Utah State.
