Bobcats Open Ash's First Fall Camp

If good first impressions are important, Monday was a monumental day for Bobcat football.
"Today was exciting all the way around," MSU's first-year coach Rob Ash said after conducting his first practice at Montana State, "just because it was the first day. Today was the first day we could really talk football with them. The guys did a good job in the meetings this morning, we got the guys cleared through all the paperwork, and this afternoon we had a full complement for practice. I really liked what I saw. There was great energy and the guys were paying attention. It was terrific."
Ash welcomed 90 players to fall camp, including six returning starters on defense and five on offense. With only 26 days remaining before the season opener at Texas A&M, Ash said scheme and design were secondary in his thoughts on Monday.
"What I liked was early in pre-practice there was a lot of individual discipline," he said. "Guys were coming out and working on things when they didn't really have to. I liked that. That's a good sign that guys want to get better."
Ash said his team's mental approach, knowing that it will be asked to ingest new offensive and defensive schemes in less than a month, was solid. "The other thing I asked the team for today was to take it easy and realize we're not going to get it all done on the first day," he said. "I wanted them to focus and learn a lot today, and they were really attentive when they weren't in the drill. If you're only paying attention during the drills you're in, and you're only in about one-third of the drills, you're missing two-thirds of the practice, so if you're listening all the time you're getting double or triple the reps. Overall they paid attention, and I think that will really help us a lot."
Montana State practices each afternoon at 2:30 pm this week, culminating in Friday's full-contact drills.
