“That was a fun match,” said MSU head coach Miya Malauulu. “It was exciting to see our kids battle, especially in games two and three. Sure, we’re going to have some growing pains with three freshmen on the floor, but I’m happy with our effort and this was a step-up from last weekend.”
Washington State (6-0) jumped out to an early 7-3 lead in the opening set, before the Bobcats closed to within 8-6. WSU then built an 18-10 advantage and held the margin for the victory.
In the second stanza, the Cougars held a 21-20 lead and rattled off a 6-2 run to push the margin to 27-22. Montana State (0-5) answered with a 6-2 run off their own to pull within 29-28, before WSU closed out the point on the next serve.
In the third game, Washington State held a 20-13 advantage before Montana State stormed back with a 13-5 run to take a 26-25 lead following a Wendy Doutre kill. WSU went on a four-point spurt to take a 29-26 edge, but the Bobcats answered with two-points, including a solo block by Kaytlin Van Burger. WSU took the next point for the victory.
MSU was paced in the loss by Doutre and Laura Viren with nine kills, apiece. Meghan Albiston guided MSU with 14 digs, while Pattie Anderson added ten. Senior setter Sarah Allen dished out 25 assists, while Doutre also added a team-high five blocks.
The Bobcats posted 52 digs and ten blocks.
WSU was led by Brittany Johnson with 14 kills and 11 digs.
In the first match of the Holiday Inn Classic, Texas A&M downed Utah State 3-0.
MSU will host Utah State at 12 p.m. on Saturday afternoon and Texas A&M at 7 p.m., both in Shroyer Gym.
