Montana State Spikers Drop Pair at Bluejay Invitational

Montana State (0-2) dropped a 20-30, 30-19, 30-18, 30-27 decision SFA (1-0) in the night-cap of the Bluejay Invitational.
SFA advanced to the second-round of last year’s NCAA Tournament, including an opening round win over Alabama. The Ladyjacks returned five starters from last year’s team.
“We played pretty well,” said MSU fifth-year head coach Miya Malauulu. “We got stuck in a couple of rotations and gave up a few big runs.”
MSU was paced by junior Laura Viren with 15 kills and 17 digs. Freshman Meghan Albiston recorded a match-high 32 digs. Senior setter Sarah Allen dished out 45 digs and added 14 digs, while freshman Demi Dlouhy paced the Bobcats at the net with six blocks.
“Laura was very steady and consistent, and that’s what we need from our outside hitting corps,” Malauulu said. “Meghan had an awesome day defensively.
“We started the day dealing with a few jitters, but I thought we played much stronger as the day went along,” Malauulu said.
In the opening round of the invitational, the Bobcats dropped a 30-24, 30-14, 30-27 decision to Middle Tennessee State.
The Blue Raiders out-hit the Bobcats .344 to .107, and held a sizeable 64-34 advantage in kills.
Highlighting play for MSU were Albiston and Dlouhy- both competing in their first collegiate match.
Albiston recorded a match-high 20 digs, while Dlouhy came off the bench to tally seven kills and a .700 attack mark in the third game.
“We were inconsistent with our serve-receive, however it was much better in game three,” Malauulu said. “Meghan and Demi each had outstanding performances, and that’s something we can build upon.”
Montana State will face Creighton on Saturday.
