Overtime Work Marks Wednesday Practice

In the two months since taking over the head coaching position at Montana State, Rob Ash and has staff have worked a considerable amount of overtime. Wednesday, the Bobcat staff worked on overtime.
Ash said overtime play falls into the realm of the situational work the Bobcats have focused on in the past week. "I've done it for years, and I think it's absolutely vital. You may not play an overtime (period) for two or three years, but when you have one it's probably going to be really important to your season. The guys need to know exactly how it works, what the rules are."
Both the offense and defense showed positive signs, Ash said of the overtime scrimmage his team waged under the supervision of an officiating crew. "I thought the first offense was very competitive coming back from being a touchdown down. The second offense scored once against the first D and got it down inside the five the second time. Both offenses played extremely well in that situation and were very competitive."
The practice-ending session introduced Bobcat players to a scenario not faced in the team's last 25 games. "We practiced everything," Ash said. "We practiced the coin toss. It's what you have to do. One of the guys asked me, is this sudden death or do we get a chance if they score. There's an example, I'm glad it wasn't game day when we figured that out."
The exercise also had ancillary benefits, Ash said. "We paired up the number one offense and defense together, they were on one team. The number one offense had been beating their heads against the number one defense, now they're teammates, and the first series one of the guys said, 'It's weird to be cheering for these guys.' But that's a positive, it's a different way to do a team-building thing."
INJURY REPORT: The Bobcats lost a pair of redshirt freshman offensive players Wednesday. Running back Blayde Becksted (Fort Collins, CO) suffered an ankle injury earlier in the week, and is out indefinitely. Receiver Mark Desin (Billings) suffered a hand injury, and will be evaluated later in the week.
LIGHT AND QUICK: Ash liked his team's work Wednesday. "We got a lot accomplished. I really liked our helmets-only practice this morning with the two-minute drill and all those situations that we covered. We did a lot of end-game stuff today, it was really good. I was worried about how their bodies would handle it because we're deep into camp now, but I thought it was great. They got a lot of light, fast work this morning and a lot of physical contact this afternoon."
