Bobcats Compete on Camp's First Weekend

Rob Ash knows that six days into his first fall camp as Montana State's head coach isn't enough time to accurately gauge a lot of areas of his team's progress, but he is pleased with one area that has nothing to do with X's and O's.
"I love the way this team competes," Ash said after a practice that concluded with a live, full-contact session. "Early on (in camp) the defense had the edge on the offense in that area, but the offense is making greats strides. We're starting to see some tough football."
Both the offensive and defensive units made big plays during the brief session, which ended with third-and-short situations pitting the two squads. Ash said it was no accident the coaching staff singled out such situations so early in camp. "I told the team that those are extremely critical situations," Ash said. "The offense has to pick those up, and defensively when you get a stop it's such a huge boost."
Montana State's 2007 offense features more oriented toward timing patterns than in the recent past, and Ash said that continues to be an emphasis. "We're making huge strides in that area, I continue to be pleased," Ash said. "We continue to work on getting the ball out on time, getting the quarterback and receivers on the same page. In the run game, (the concern) continues to be getting a hat on a hat. We continue to work on assignment issues."
After taking a break from practice on Sunday, the two-a-day portion of camp starts for the Bobcats on Monday. MSU practices at 9:30 am and 3:15 pm Monday.
