The Sports Scholar Award honors undergraduate students of color who have made achieving both academically and athletically a winning combination.
Inspired by tennis legend Arthur Ashe Jr.’s commitment to education as well as his love for the game of tennis, nominees must exhibit academic excellence (3.20 cumulative grade-point) and community activism.
This past season, Garcia helped guide the Bobcats to the 11th best turnaround in the nation, averaging 9.9 points and 7.0 rebounds, while starting 28 of 29 games.
“Nubia is a great example of what all of our student-athletes are doing in the women’s basketball program,” said MSU head coach Tricia Binford. “Our student-athletes represent the University very well, and are role models for the community. Our athletes understand the importance of giving back to a community that’s given so much to them.”
Garcia, a photography major, was involved in an after school reading program; took part in the CHAMPS NCAA-Health Promotions grant that provided an alcohol free alternative to tailigating; and served as a clinician for the Gallatin Valley Lion’s Club.
