“We’re excited to have a coach of Jim Svoboda’s caliber joining our staff,” Ash said. “Jim and I go way back. We have coached against each other, recruited against each other and I have watched him win national championships. I have great respect for him and he brings a standard of excellence to our student-athletes both on and off the field.”
Svoboda served at UCLA from 2004-07. During his tenure with the Bruins he was a member of the staff that turned around one of the lowest ranked offenses in the nation in 2003 to one of the best in 2005. In addition, Svoboda helped UCLA quarterback Drew Olson to All-Pacific 10 second-team kudos his senior year, as Olson ranked second in the nation in touchdown passes, fifth in pass efficiency and eighth in the Heisman Trophy voting.
“I’m excited to be at a highly respected university like Montana State,” Svoboda said. “I want to help continue the great tradition of I-AA football in Bozeman, and I look forward to working with a coach the caliber of Rob Ash, who I truly believe is one of the finest coaches at any level, and the staff he has assembled.”
During his time in Westwood, Svoboda was part of a staff that made three consecutive bowl appearances as well as upset No.2-ranked USC in the final regular-season game this past fall.
From 1994-2004, Svoboda served as offensive coordinator and QB coach at Northwest Missouri State. He helped guide NWM to back-to-back national championships in 1998 and 1999, master-minding one of the nation’s most potent offenses. For six seasons, his offense averaged over 450 yards and 40 points per game. For his efforts, Svoboda was named the American Football Coaches Magazine Offensive Coordinator of the Year in 1998.
Svoboda has also had tour of duties at Nebraska Wesleyan (1986-93; Head Coach), Eastern New Mexico (1985-86; Running Backs), Dana College (1984-85; Offensive Line/Strength) and Northwestern (IA) College (1983-84; Running Backs).
He is a 1983 graduate of Northwestern (IA) College with a degree in psychology and physical education. Svoboda earned his Master’s of Science degree in 1986 from Eastern New Mexico in physical education.
