Montana State's track program added three standout discus throwers on Tuesday, Bobcat throws coach Mike Carignan said.
Alan Skogen comes to MSU from Ronan High School, where he posted the state's best discus mark this year, 177-9. He finished third in the State A discus competition as a junior in 2006, winning the state championship this year. He also played football, was active in music and drama, and belongs to the National Honor Society. Ronan's student body president plans to study engineering at MSU. "Alan has the drive, and character needed to continue developing as a thrower," Carignan said. "We're excited to have him on our team."
Butte High's Alex Smith finished second in the State AA State Meet in the discus this spring, and owns a best mark of 168-2. Smith, from Divide, belongs to the National Honor Society, played football and basketball for the Bulldogs, and plans to study civil engineering at MSU. "Alex is someone that can continue to develop his strength and technique for several years," Carignan said. "I think that he has great athletic potential, as well as the right attitude for success."
Kirstin Lee joins the Bobcats from Newberg, Ore. She finished third at the Oregon State Meet this spring in the discus, and fifth in the shot put. She owns best marks of 137-4 in the discus and 38-9 in the shot, and was a four-year member of Newberg High's volleyball squad. An active member of Future Farmers of America, she plans to major in agricultural business. "Kirsten has the attitude and values that we want," Carignan said. "I am confident that she will contribute to our team as a freshman."
