Berg Heads to Nationals

The news was mixed for the Montana State track and field program on Tuesday.
As expected, Kim Berg qualified for the NCAA Championships in the javelin throw with a best mark of 162-4, the NCAA announced late Tuesday morning. The junior from Kremlin enters the meet as the 23rd-ranked women's javelin thrower. Senior hammer thrower Ashley Jones, from Harlowton, narrowly missed qualifying, however. Her best mark of 195-feet is better than some automatic qualifiers to the meet, but not good enough to land her an at-large berth.
"We're excited for Kim," said MSU coach Dale Kennedy, "but at the same time we're disappointed Ashley didn't get in. It's a good accomplishment that we're sending three kids to nationals, and we know they'll represent us well."
Berg joins men's javelin thrower Nick Lam, a freshman from Billings, who qualified automatically by virtue of finishing third in the NCAA Midwest Regional meet last weekend. He is ranked 25th entering the meet. Likewise, junior pole vaulter Ellie Rudy qualifies by finishing third. Rudy is ranked second in the nation in the pole vault entering the outdoor championships.
