Montana State bolstered its distance crew, inking a trio of out-of-state standouts on Thursday.
Kelvin Dartha of Colbert, Wash., finished eighth in the Washington 4A State Cross Country Championships last fall, leading Spokane's Mead HS to a second place finish. He also finished fifth in the Washington-Oregon Border Cross Country Meet at Beaverton, Ore., and 11th at the Nike Team Nationals in December. He owns best marks of 4:33 in the 1600 and 9:29.33 in the 3200. "Kelvin really showed good improvement during the fall, and he's a very good student who wants to study engineering," Kennedy said. "He loves to run cross country, but has also committed himself to the track, as well, and I'm excited about his future in our program."
Frank Lagrimanta won Class 3A Idaho State Championships in the mile and two mile runs in 2006, and won a pair of state cross country titles at Timberlake HS in Spirit Lake, Idaho. He also finished second in the Mountain One Cross Country Meet in Missoula last fall, and owns best marks of 4:28.5 in the mile and 9:39.0 in the 3200. "Frank is one of the better distance kids in the Pacific Northwest," said MSU coach Dale Kennedy. "He's real interested in MSU because he wants to study Civil Engineering. We saw him in a real knock-down, drag-out race in Missoula and love the way he competes."
Tyler Noland, who competes for Bobcat Hall of Famer Laurie Adams Sax at Richland (Wash.) HS, finished 12th in the Washington 4A State Cross Country Championships last fall, and finished 5th in the state track meet in the 800 as a junior and seventh in the 1600 as a sophomore. He finished sixth in the Simplot Games mile in Pocatello, Idaho this winter, as well, and owns best marks of 4:15.35 in the mile, 1:56.12 in the 800 and 50.0 in the 400. "Tyler has incredible range," Kennedy said. "He would own our season's best 800, mile, and 1500 marks right now, and is very competitive in cross country. He really stepped it up this winter, so he is still improving and we expect outstanding things from him."
Kennedy said he's excited about the infusion of talent and youth in his men's cross country and distance programs. "These kids really bring energy and ability to our cross country program in the fall, and to our track program."
