Jones Wins Third Title, Berg Captures MVP Honors

Ashley Jones completed her hammer throw hat trick and Kim Berg's third javelin championship landed the Bobcat junior Big Sky Field Event Athlete of the Meet honors to highlight Montana State's 2007 Big Sky Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Pocatello, Idaho.
Jones, a senior from Harlowton, finishes her Big Sky career with three straight hammer throw titles, becoming the fifth Bobcat to win an outdoor event three times. The fourth Bobcat to do so, Kim Berg, who won her third straight javelin title as a junior on Friday, also became MSU's third field events athlete in the last four years to capture Big Sky Athlete of the Meet honors.
"That's really an outstanding accomplishment for those three-time champions," said MSU coach Dale Kennedy. "That puts them in a very elite circle in this conference's history." Ellie Rudy became a three-time outdoor champion on Friday, winning her third straight pole vault title.
Berg's third javelin title, sandwiched around a redshirt season last spring, gives MSU seven women's javelin titles in the last 11 years. The junior from Kremlin is the fifth Big Sky athlete to win three women's javelin championships.
Ashley Jones' third straight hammer throw title extends MSU's string to four straight championships in that event. She joins Idaho State's Maureen Griffin as the only three-time Big Sky Champions in the hammer.
Rudy's third straight pole vault championship gives MSU six of the last seven crowns in that event. Rudy, who won the 2007 NCAA Indoor Championship, is the Big Sky's only three-time pole vault champion.
Nick Lam won MSU's fourth conference champion Saturday afternoon, as the freshman from Billings won the javelin title. Lam is the seventh Bobcat to win the Big Sky javelin crown, but the first since Rich Paull's back-to-back efforts in 1984 and '85.
Kennedy was proud of both his men's and women's teams' efforts in Pocatello. "I think we competed well, and the men really exceeded expectations. It was a good meet for us as a team, and a really outstanding meet individually."
