Huntingdale brings a wealth of volleyball experience to the Bobcat program, most coming from the high school and club level.
“Steve is well versed in all aspects of the game,” Malauulu said. “He brings a lot of energy to the practice gym. He is a determined individual that has a great passion for the sport.
“Steve also has an extensive club background and has developed a lot of recruiting ties around the country, including Colorado, Minnesota and Texas,” Malauulu said. “That will be a huge asset for our program.”
Prior to his move to Bozeman, Huntingdale taught at Smoky Hill High School in Aurora, Colorado. He served as head volleyball coach at SHHS from 1999-2004 and recorded an overall record of 154-28 during his tenure.
His squads captured the 2001 and 2002 5A state championships, while finishing third overall in 2000, 2003 and 2004.
Huntingdale coached Rachel Holloway and Ashley Nu’u at Smoky Hill. Holloway was a setter on the University of Nebraska’s National Championship squad, while Nu’u was a third-team All-America performer at the University of Colorado.
For his efforts, Huntingdale was named the 2003 Denver Post 5A Coach of the Year; 2002 Rocky Mountain News 5A Coach of the Year; and was selected as head coach of the Colorado Coaches of Girls Sports All-State team in 2002.
Huntingdale was also Lead Coach for the Front Range Volleyball Club from 1995-2006. In 2005, he led his team to a Junior Olympics silver medal at the 15 Club level, and guided his 14 Open contingent to a bronze medal in 2004.
He was the 1999 and 2004 recipient of the Front Range Spirit of Excellence award.
"I am grateful and excited to have this awesome opportunity to coach at Montana State,” Huntingdale said. “MSU and Bozeman are amazing places and I look forward to making the best of both."
A 1995 graduate of Colorado State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history, Huntingdale is currently a social studies teacher at Bozeman High School. He will begin full-time duties at MSU at the conclusion of the school year.
Huntingdale is married to the former Erica Schnee, who is a graduate of both Bozeman High and Montana State University.
