Not a day goes by that Mike Kramer doesn't make a quick nod to Torley Aasheim, the recently departed, lifelong Bobcat fan that incessantly questioned the wisdom of Kramer's decision to use the roll punt the last four seasons.
This spring, Kramer knows, Torley, somewhere, is smiling. "Torley can finally rest in peace," Kramer said, "because we're exploring the conventional aspect of our punting game."
Both of MSU's punters - Eric Fisher, who also handles place kicking duties, and reserve receiver Tyler Bolton - seem better suited to conventional punting than the rugby-style roll punt. "I was happy with our punting today," Kramer said with a laugh, "and we certainly had a number of opportunities. Eric Fisher had a solid day."
Kramer remains undecided how his team will punt once fall arrives. "We took a long look at (conventional punting) this spring. Will we use it in the fall? I don't know. We have a decision to make."

Kramer took the occasion Saturday to unveil his program's spring award winners, and Memorial Stadium at Great Falls High took on a strong north-central Montana flavor during the ceremonies. Former CM Russell star Jeff Hansen snagged one of the program's three strength training awards, while Ty McDonald of Geyser earned the Hayden Ferguson Award for Academic Excellence. Kramer also announced MSU's team captains Saturday, a group that includes three long-time Bobcats and another that seems that way.
TE Elliott Barnhart, OT Peder Jensen, LB Will Claggett, and DL Aaron Papich, a former CMR star, enter their senior seasons as team captains. "All four are long-time members of our program, and I consider Will in that category even though he's only been here one season. They've seen the best of this program, and their leadership mimicks the great players in this program's recent history."
