Bobcat Men Fall to Lumberjacks in Opening Round of Big Sky Championships

MSU’s hopes for a fourth straight title ended as the Lumberjacks captured the doubles point, before winning at Nos. 5 and 6 to take a 3-0 advantage.
The Bobcats answered as Kyle McDonald defeated Fernando Freitas 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 singles, followed by Anton Leonenko’s 6-1, 6-4 victory over Michael Platzer at No. 3 to help MSU close the lead to 3-2.
NAU’s Jeffrey Morys closed out the match with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Justin Hauck at No. 4 singles.
“Northern Arizona was a little hungrier then we were,” said MSU men’s coach Mike Phillips. “I’m proud of the way our kids finished the season. They battled for every point.
“A lot of people are holding this squad up to the standards of the last three years, and that isn’t fair,” Phillips said. “Those squads were the likes that we may never see again. With that said, this year’s team was young, but I’m very excited about their potential and the future of our program.”
The Bobcats finished their season 6-18 overall and 3-4 in Big Sky play.
