Montana State Women’s Basketball Team Doles Out Awards

Senior Alyssa Nelson was named the team’s most valuable player as voted by her teammates. Nelson finished the season averaging 9.5 points, 3.6 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 2.2 steals per game. In addition, she finished her career sixth on MSU’s all-time three-point percentage chart, eighth in assists, eighth in 3-point makes, and tenth in steals.
Nelson also garnered defensive player of the year kudos, after finishing third in the league in steals per game.
Junior Rebecca Mercer earned the Bozeman Trophy Player of the Year award. The native of Perth, Australia averaged 12.3 points per game, led the Big Sky in free throw percentage, and best the Bobcats in assists. In addition, she was a second-team All-Big Sky performer and was named the conference’s Newcomer of the Year.
Senior Whitney Connolly took home a pair of honors. The Ennis native was named Sixth Man, after coming off the bench to average 9.4 points and 4.3 rebounds per game. In addition, Connolly earned the team’s Community Service award.
Senior Scotta Morton also took two honors. The native of Bozeman was the squad’s strength award recipient, while also being named co-Bobcat Pride winner, along with junior college transfer Krislyn Wallace.
The most improved player accolade went to freshman Jamie Thornton. The 6-4 center from Pullman, Wash., finished the season averaging 1.9 points and 1.6 rebounds per game. Thornton notched a season-best 11 points in MSU’s win over Sacramento State.
The Bobcats will take an international trip to the Bahamas in mid May.
