Frosh QB Moves Offense in Second Scrimmage

Kicker Eric Fisher nailed all four of his field goal tries and Jordan Rasmussen threw for 149 yards in Montana State's second football scrimmage of the spring Friday.
Rasmussen, a redshirt freshman taking all the snaps because of injuries to varsity signal callers Jack Rolovich and Cory Carpenter, completed 20 of his 34 passes for during the 64-play scrimmage. The Bobcat offense didn't turn the ball over, and Rasmussen engineered one touchdown drive and four others that resulted in field goals.
"(Jordan is) making progress," Kramer said of the freshman, who rallied from an 8-for-19 start by completing nine of his last 13 passes. "He's riding with the ones, so he's naturally going to assimilate the position a little bit better."
Tailback Evin Grove rushed for 57 yards, which including a 48-yard touchdown run, on eight carries, while tight end Joe Schreibeis caught four passes for 26 yards as part of a scaled-back offense. "The scrimmage was extremely, exquisitely, excruciatingly limited because of the numbers and the health of our offensive front," Kramer said. The Bobcats played without three projected offensive line starters.
That personnel situation, Kramer said, "left us with two true freshman tackles, Jeff Miller and Mike Person. The entire day was scripted to those two guys, how tired they were and what they could handle, and those guys are not quite ready for prime time. They're just not. And they're playing against a defense that has some savvy and skill." Kramer credited offensive coordinator Don Bailey and defensive coordinator Rob Christoff with constructing a scrimmage in which "we got better as a team."
While lauding the play of the defense, Kramer also singled out Fisher's kicking. "Eric Fisher had a really nice day kicking the ball," Kramer said. Fisher nailed a 50-yarder to open scoring on the first drive. That field goal was set up by a 26-yard pass from Rasmussen to sophomore receiver Derek Green. Fisher also converted from 45, 24 and 37 yards on the afternoon.
Montana State wraps up its spring practice session on Saturday, April 28, with the Triangle Classic in Great Falls.
