Bobcat Women’s Tennis Squad Trees Griz

The victory solidifies MSU’s hold on the No. 3 seed for the Big Sky Conference Tournament next weekend in Sacramento.
The Bobcats opened the match winning at No. 2 doubles, where the tandem of Nuria Hernandez and Nicole Luetolf won 8-2. UM won at No. 3 doubles in a 7-4 tie break, before MSU’s top duo of Katy Proietti and Allison Fey fought back from a 4-1 deficit to win 9-8 (7-5) in a tie-breaker.
“The doubles point was huge,” said MSU women’s coach Denise Albrecht. “It really set the tone for the rest of the match and put the pressure more on Montana’s shoulder.”
Montana State freshman Laura Villegas opened singles play, cruising to a 6-4, 6-0 win over UM’s Cheyne Ursich at No. 4 singles.
The Grizzlies answered sweeping Nos. 1 and 2 singles to tie the match at 2-2.
Former MSU basketball player turned tennis standout Katy Proietti then posted a 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 3 singles over Danni Paulson, before Hilmer secured the victory with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Kayla Moyse.
“Katy Proietti really came through in a big match,” Albrecht said. “We needed that point and she came through. McKenzie (Hilmer) also battled some adversity and came out on top.”
UM’s Martyna Nowak concluded the match with a hard-fought 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 win over Remy Clark.
The Bobcat women will host Idaho State, Saturday at 10 a.m.
