Mike Green knows his only chance of qualifying for the Big Sky Conference Championships in the decathlon begins Friday morning in Pocatello, Idaho. But the Montana State sophomore is not worried much about it.
"Not really," Green said about the possibility of feeling pressure during the decathlon of Idaho State's Springfest track meet this weekend. The decathlon begins Thursday morning, and runs through Friday.
Green, from Simms, said his reasoning for not sweating the importance of this week's competition is simple. "Usually when I worry about it I do worse," he said with a smile."
Like MSU's top multi-event competitor, Bobcat coach Dale Kennedy isn't worried about this weekend's competition, either. "Tom (Eitel, MSU's multi-event coach) has Mike ready to go," Kennedy said. "They worked hard during the indoor season, Mike placed in the (Big Sky) heptathlon, and he's worked hard on his throwing."
Green admits that the decathlon throwing events, the javelin, discus and shot put. "It's a progressive thing, slowly getting better every day. I definitely want to show some strength in the throwing events (at ISU)," he said.
While Green continues to improve in the throws, Kennedy said he leans on his strength. "Mike reminds me of Brad Benjamin," Kennedy said of MSU's former two-time All-Big Sky decathlete. "He really likes to run. He's a good high jumper and has shored up the pole vault, but Mike is a strong runner."
Green's aptitude in the middle distances allows Green to finish decathlons, which conclude with the 1500 meters, strong. "There's somewhat that kind of attitude," he said. "If I'm not so great in some events, I figure I might make up some of that (in the 1500)."
The decathlon's finale event is grueling, Green said. "At the beginning it's not so bad," he said, "but the last 500 meters is brutal."
