Montana State held a 2-0 advantage after winning the opening doubles point and receiving at straight set victory by Kyle McDonald at No. 2 singles.
NAU’s Jeff Morys then captured No. 4 singles to pull the Lumberjacks within a point.
However, MSU’s No. 1 singles player Jakub Dybala answered with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Gareth Ducray to give the Bobcats a 3-1 advantage.
Northern Arizona staged a late match rally, winning in straight sets at No. 3 singles, before earning victories at Nos. 5 and 6- both in three sets.
“Dean Owen has done a fantastic job with his squad,” said MSU men’s coach Mike Phillips. “It came down to who wanted the match more, and NAU came out on top. They competed harder and got the win.”
The Bobcats opened the match as MSU’s No. 1 tandem of Dybala and McDonald rallied for a 9-7 win to break a 1-1 tie. MSU also received a doubles win at No. 3 where Kovas and Myles Perkins combined for an 8-5 victory.
Both the MSU men’s and women’s teams will host Montana and Idaho State, next weekend.
