MSU Men’s Tennis Team Holds on for Victory

“Our kids are still learning how to battle,” said MSU men’s coach Mike Phillips. “This match was as close as they get, but we found a way to squeeze it out.”
Weber State opened the match winning at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles to take the opening point. The only doubles victory MSU captured was at No. 3, where Justin Hauck and Anton Leonenko defeated WSU’s Quinn Allred and Cole Paterson 8-2.
MSU opened singles play with three consecutive victories as Jakub Dybala, Justin Hauck and David Kovas each won in straight sets to put the Bobcats up 3-1.
Weber State answered winning at Nos. 2 and 5 singles in matches that went the full three sets.
The match was decided at No. 3 singles, where Leonenko held on for a hard fought 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 victory over WSU’s Travis Covington. Covington held a 4-3 advantage in the third set, before an unsportsmanlike code violation cost him a game. Leonenko, a freshman from Calgary, Alberta won the final two games to secure the win for MSU.
MSU will host Northern Arizona on Sunday at 10 a.m.
