Bobcat Track Team Hosts Invite Saturday

Montana State hosts the first of its two 2007 home meets Saturday, as a pair of UMs - Montana and Mary - get together with a couple of MSUs - Montana State and Minnesota State (Moorhead). With decent weather forecasted for the weekend, the ‘Cats look to continue registering conference and regional qualifiers in this non-team scoring competition.

Sprints & Hurdles
Mary and Montana bring strong sprint crews to the Bozeman. Mary’s Josh Dinius made a strong impression at the MSU Open indoors, while Cassie Blazer won the 400 hurdles and Kacie Sweep and Marcia Knight impressed at the Al Manuel meet this spring. Montana counters with Loni Perkins-Judisch, the Big Sky’s top sprinter, and the one-two men’s punch of Matt Larsen, a Big Sky Champ, and Cody Henning. Torey Scheafer and Autumn Domitrovich lead the Bobcat women, while Ben Soukup leads the men.
Distance
Montana standout Allie Brosch and MSU’s Ashley Hadway and Elisabeth Driscoll could wage battles in the distance events. Kurt Michels, Matt Beamer and Nick Atwood lead MSU’s men, while Montana’s Dan Bingham is a Big Sky title contender.
Throws
MSU’s strong suit, Big Sky champs Kylee Zent, Ashley Jones and Kim Berg lead the women, with Tanner Rauk, Jesse Allen, and the javelin quartet of Taylor Hensen, Dustin Degen, Dan van Swearingen and Nick Lam pace the men. Montana’s Abby Effertz posted a three-foot PR at MSU last spring,
Jumps
The vault pit might be the hot spot this weekend, with MSU’s National Champion Ellie Rudy dueling Mary All-Americas Jennifer Hensel, and men’s indoor runnerup Eric Brugger. Montana’s versatil Ryan Grinnell and MSU freshman Charlie Hirning battle in the high jump.

“This is our third meet of the spring, so it’s basically the half-way point of our regular season. If the weather cooperates, this is the meet we can really expect to post some outstanding marks. Our kids tend to come out and really perform in this meet because after a month off between indoors and outdoors this is about when they’ve really knocked the rust off. We consider this something of a developmental season in that we’ve redshirted several of our top kids and lost a couple for the season to injury. Yet, we’re not taking the approach that we don’t have individual or team goals this spring. We have a lot of top-flight competitors, and I think we might finish higher in the Big Sky than people expect, but we’re not a strong dual team right now because our strengths are lumped in a small number of event groups.”

Dale Kennedy is in his 25th year as MSU’s women’s coach, his third as coach of the combined program... was Women’s Big Sky Coach of the Year for the 2001 indoor and ‘03 outdoor seasons, and Men’s COY in ‘05... has led MSU to two women’s XC titles this decade, and has led the Lady Cats to three conference track titles and a pair of runnerup finishes... has produced nine All-Americas and 21 NCAA qualifiers... MSU’s men’s Big Sky outdoor title in ‘05 was the program’s first men’s Big Sky crown ever
