MSU Golfers Head to Conference Tourney

The event will be played at Palm Valley Golf Club, a 6,165 yard, par 72 course, and includes 18 holes each day. The team champion will represent the BSC at the NCAA Regional on May 10-12 at St. George, Utah.
Kelly Gillum leads the ‘Cat contingent. Gillum, a junior from Fort Collins, Colorado, placed fifth at last year’s conference tourney shooting the lowest score (225) a Bobcat has fired in that event. Sophomores Tessa Stevenson (Kalispell) and LaRae Smith (Sierra Vista, Ariz.), and juniors Kate Steffanich (Billings) and Stephanie Simmons (Boise, Idaho) round out the tourney team. Simmons tied for 16th in last year’s event while Smith tied for 34th.
Head coach Brittany Basye is excited about the level of experience her squad has on this course, as MSU hosts an annual invite on the same course.
“The biggest expectation is that this group will finally unload their game. Hopefully we are peaking at the right time,” Basye said. “We’ve only had a four-day break since our last event, and they golfed well last week, so we’re hoping to continue that confidence.”
Defending champion Montana currently sits fifth in average scores per round and will be challenged by conference leaders Northern Arizona, Eastern Washington, and Sacramento State. NAU boasts four of the top six golfers in the current BSC standings. MSU last won the event in 1995 under coach Dan Davies.
