‘Jacks End Bobcat Women’s Hoop Season

Unfortunately, the Bobcat women’s basketball team fell short in both categories.
Montana State (13-16) shot 31 percent from the field and was out-rebounded 44-31 as Northern Arizona cruised to a 76-53 win in front of 1,177 spectators.
“I’m proud of what our kids accomplished this season,” said MSU second-year head coach Tricia Binford. “We just didn’t bring our best effort. The story of our season was playing a good game, followed by a poor showing. I guess it’s the sign of progress.”
The Bobcats raced to an early 11-6 lead, including a pair of two fastbreak layups by Rebecca Mercer. Northern Arizona (19-11) put a stop to MSU’s transition game and went on a 15-0 run to stake a 21-11 lead with ten-minutes remaining in the opening stanza.
MSU went without a field goal for ten minutes during that stretch.
NAU entered intermission with a 33-23 advantage.
The second half belonged to the Lumberjacks as NAU shot 50 percent from the field.
MSU was paced in the loss by sophomore Nubia Garcia, who recorded a team-high 13 points- connecting on 4-of-6 from the field. Junior Krislyn Wallace the Bobcats under the glass with a game-high nine rebounds.
Northern Arizona was guided by Alyssa Wahl with 17 points and nine rebounds.
MSU finished its season with 13 victories, which was ten more than last season.
“The coaches and media picked us last, so it was good that we exceeded those expectations,” Binford said. “We still have work to do.”
MSU will lose the services of seniors Whitney Connolly, Scotta Morton and Alyssa Nelson.
