Cross Country
The Montana State men’s cross country team ranked fourth in the nation in cumulative grade-point average among all NCAA Division I institutions. The Bobcats had a team GPA of 3.49, which ranked only behind Wright State (3.70), Weber State (3.54) and Iowa State (3.50). The award is conferred by the United States Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association.
Men’s Basketball (11-18, 8-7)
Dissly and Taylor Receive Post Season Honors
Senior Nick Dissly garnered second team All-Big Sky Conference honors in men’s basketball, the conference announced. The honor was a first for Dissly. Junior Carlos Taylor received honorable mention honors on the all-conference team.
Last Week:
Mar. 3: lost at Portland State in first round of Big Sky Tournament, 71-96
Portland State used strong starts in each half to earn a 96-71 win over the Bobcats in the first round of the Big Sky Conference Tournament on Saturday in Portland. PSU opened the game on a 20-7 run, a lead MSU had eradicated by the end of the intermission, but the damage done in the 12-4 spurt to start the second half was irreversible. Carlos Taylor led the ‘Cats in scoring with 23, followed by Ted Morris with 17.

The Bobcat women travel to the Chinook Wireless Big Sky Conference Tournament in Missoula this weekend. The ‘Cats secured a number five seed with their win over Weber State on Saturday and will face the number four seed, Northern Arizona in round one. MSU lost both meetings with NAU earlier this season. The winner of that game plays number one seed Montana on Friday, March 9 at 7:30 p.m. at Dahlberg Arena in Missoula.

March 3: beat Weber State, 66-63
Montana State junior Rebecca Mercer notched a game and career-high 25 points to lift the Bobcats to a 66-63 win over Weber State, Saturday afternoon in Worthington Arena. Mercer, who connected on 10-17 from the floor, led four Montana State players in double-figures. Also hitting double-digits were Krislyn Wallace 15, Whitney Connolly 10, and Nubia Garcia 10.
Indoor Track and Field
This Week:
Mar. 9-10: NCAA Indoor Championships; Fayetteville, Arkansas
Montana State pole vault standout Ellie Rudy travels to her first indoor national championship this weekend. Rudy, a junior from Woodland Park, Colorado, currently ranks third in the nation in the event with a vault of 14’0”. The women’s pole vault is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 10.
Last Week:
Sophomore Kylee Zent took second in the women’s shot put with a throw of 48’5” in Seattle at the Last Chance Qualifier Meet Saturday. Zent already had an NCAA provisional mark in the event, but did not improve on her season best throw of 50’10.25”. At the same meet, sprinter Dan Johnson took third in the 400 with a time of 48.18. Johnson did not get an NCAA provisional time that would have put him in contention for a trip to the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships next week.

Mar. 12-14: Bobcat Desert Classic; Goodyear, Arizona
Montana State hosts its annual pair of events this week in Goodyear, Arizona at the Palm Valley Golf Club. First, MSU takes on Montana as a warm-up for the Bobcat Desert Classic that will be held Mar. 12-14. The 20-team field includes Montana State, Montana, Utah Valley State, Weber State, Gonzaga, Northern Arizona, British Columbia, North Dakota State, Northern Colorado, William and Mary, Wyoming, Oral Roberts, Grand Canyon, Portland, UC- Riverside, Cal Poly, Idaho State, North Texas, Sacramento State, Western New Mexico. Eastern Washington is the only Big Sky Conference team missing the event, which is played on the same course as this year’s conference championship.

Junior Kelly Gillum shot an even par 72 on the final round of the Red Rocks Invite to propel the Montana State golf team to an eighth place finish in Sedona, Arizona. Despite the first round being partially postponed due to darkness, the Bobcat golfers persevered to begin the spring season on a high note. Gillum was followed in scoring by sophomore LaRae Smith (t-20th), Shannon Donnegan (t-46), Stephanie Simmons (t-58) and Hilary Folkvord (t-70).

Ten Bobcats qualified for the NCAA Championships- MSU’s largest contingent since the resurrection of the program in 1994. Qualifying for Montana State were Jamie Woelk, Claire Rennie, Mandy Bowden, Chris Coe and Nathan Park in Nordic, and Spela Bertoncelj, Amy Lattimer, Carmel McElroy, Toby LaMar and Don Brockett in alpine. MSU’s fifth place finish was the squad’s best showing since 1994.

Men’s tennis heads to Utah this week to take on BYU and the University of Utah.

After handily beating Utah State and MSU-Billings, the men’s tennis team lost a close match to Gonzaga on Sunday. MSU won three of the six singles matches (Dybala, McDonald and Leonenko) but lost two of three doubles matches to lose the critical doubles point that swayed the match.

After a week off, the women’s tennis team hits the road for a swing through eastern Washington to face conference foe Eastern Washington and Gonzaga. Last season, the women beat EWU 6-1 and lost to Gonzaga 2-5 at home.
