Garcia Lifts Bobcat Women Past Sacramento State

“It was ugly at times, but a win-is-a-win,” said second-year head coach Tricia Binford. “I thought we did a nice job executing against their zone. That’s something we’ve been working on.”
Garcia, a native of Chihuahua, Mexico finished the game shooting 9-of-12 from the field. She also added seven rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block.
Also in double-digits for Montana State (10-12, 5-5) were Rebecca Mercer 12, Alyssa Nelson 12 and Krislyn Wallace 10. Wallace also added six rebounds for the Bobcats.
“We had players come off the bench and contribute,” Binford said. “We got into early foul trouble with our posts and it was nice to see other kids come in a get the job done.”
MSU trailed only three times in the opening period and entered intermission with a 34-27 advantage.
In the second half, the Bobcats built their largest lead of the game at 64-52 following a pair of Nelson free throws with 4:39 left.
For the game, the Bobcats shot 46 percent from the field and held the Hornets to 41 percent, including just 35 percent in the opening stanza.
“Sacramento State got after us and were very physical,” Binford said. “I thought they played a very solid game.”
Sacramento State (3-20, 1-8) held a slim 33-32 advantage in rebounding; however the Hornets turned the ball over 27 times.
Sacramento State was led by Kim Sheehy, who posted 16 points, including four 3-pointers.
MSU will travel to Montana on Sunday for a 4 p.m. tip with the Lady Griz.
