NEXT UP: The Montana State women’s basketball team will play its third and fourth straight games on the road this week, beginning with Sacramento State, Wednesday, Feb. 7 at 8 p.m. (MST). MSU will travel to Missoula on Sunday, Feb. 11 to face intra-state rival Montana. Tip is slated for 4:05 p.m.
ON THE AIR: All Montana State women’s basketball games will be carried live on My 103.5 FM. Veteran broadcaster Mark Martello will handle play-by-play duties for his second straight season. Martello will begin his broadcast with the Bobcat Pregame Show, originating 15-minutes prior to tip-off. The annual MSU-UM clash will also be televised on the MTN Network (CBS affiliates).
SERIES FACTS: Montana State is 16-5 all-time against Sacramento St. MSU won the last meeting in OT in the Hornets’ Nest. MSU trails UM 61-17 all-time.
FAST BREAKS: Montana State captured its second straight split on the road and have a 2-2 mark away from Worthington Arena in league play…the Bobcats are 0-5 in games decided by three points or less, including a 55-53 setback at Portland State…Whitney Connolly came off the bench to record her third double-double of the year. Connolly led MSU at E. Washington with 16 points and ten rebounds…Alyssa Nelson was in double-digits in both games last weekend, including a weekend high 12 points against EWU on 5-6 shooting…Krislyn Wallace posted a career-high 14 rebounds at Portland State…The Bobcats did a nice job on PSU’s Kelsey Kahle this season. Kahle, who is the Vikings’ leading scorer and rebounder, averaged six points and 4.5 rebounds, while shooting 17 percent (4-24) from the field in the two meetings between the schools…Rebecca Mercer and Nubia Garcia have been on fire from the free throw line. The duo has combined to shoot 95 percent (39-41) from the line in Big Sky play…In Big Sky action, Mercer shoots better from 3-point range (.444) then from the field (.381)…Wallace and Garcia are tied for the team lead in rebounding, averaging 7.0 boards, apiece.
BOBCAT PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Montana State junior guard Rebecca Mercer was named Montana State’s Player of the Week for her efforts against Eastern Washington and Portland State. Mercer hit double-figures in both games last weekend, including a team-high 14 points against Portland State. For the weekend, she averaged 13 points, 2.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists, while shooting 47 percent from the floor and 100 percent from the free throw line. Mercer, who leads the Bobcats in free throw percentage in all games, has connected on 22-of-23 in her last 11 outings. In all, Mercer has recorded 14 double-figure scoring games this season. On the season, she leads the Bobcats in scoring, averaging 11.6 points per game. She is also first in assists, averaging 3.1 per contest.
WHO’S HOT:
*Junior college transfer Krislyn Wallace continued her stellar play this season, posting a career-high 14 rebounds against Portland State on Saturday. In all, the native of Hooper, Utah recorded 19 points and 17 rebounds, while shooting 57 percent from the field, last weekend. Wallace has posted double-digit scoring games in six of the last seven games.
*Nubia Garcia is third on the squad in scoring in Big Sky action, averaging 10.4 points per game. The native of Chihuahua, Mexico leads MSU in rebounding, averaging 7.6 boards per game in league play. Garcia is also getting the job done at the free throw line where she has hit 28-of-30 attempts.
*Senior Alyssa Nelson had back-to-back scoring games last weekend. The native of Edina, Minn. posted 12 points in MSU’s win over Eastern Washington, connecting on five-of-six from the field.
SHORING UP THE ‘D’: Last winter, Montana State ranked last in the Big Sky in scoring margin, rebounding offense, rebounding margin, scoring defense and defensive rebounds. Heading into this season, MSU head coach Tricia Binford placed emphasis on shoring up the Bobcat defense. Here’s a look at where the Bobcats currently rank in the same categories entering the Big Sky Conference season: scoring margin (5th), rebounding offense (4th), rebounding margin (4th), scoring defense (4th), and defensive rebounds (3rd).
IT TAKES A THIEF: Montana State is third in the Big Sky averaging 10.33 steals per game. The Bobcats have three players among the top 10 for steals. They include: Alyssa Nelson (2nd, 2.48), Erica Perry (3rd, 2.424, and Nubia Garcia (7th, 1.71).
A WELL BALANCED DIET: The Bobcats do not have a player ranked among the top 10 in the Big Sky in scoring; however, MSU has four players ranked from Nos. 13-21. They include: Rebecca Mercer (13th, 11.6), Alyssa Nelson (16th, 10.2), Nubia Garcia (17th, 10.0) and Whitney Connolly (21st, 9.4).
A VIEW FROM THE PINE: MSU has received excellent support from its bench. MSU’s eight players coming off the pine are averaging 22.8 points per game. The group is led by senior Whitney Connolly, who is averaging 9.4 points and 4.2 rebounds per contest.
SMART COOKIES: The 2005-06 Montana State basketball team ranked 5th in the nation for cumulative grade-point average by the WBCA, with a 3.46 gpa. All ten players on the roster garnered All-Big Sky Conference Academic honors. Alyssa Nelson, Scotta Morton and Whitney Connolly are three-time All-Big Sky Academic picks.
