Montana State (9-12, 4-5) took its largest lead of the game at 35-25 with 16:45 remaining following a Krislyn Wallace layin.
Portland State (9-14, 5-5) fought back with a 17-7 run to tie the game at 42-all with 9:15 left.
Trailing 52-50 with 1:25 remaining, MSU’s Rebecca Mercer converted a three-point play to give the Bobcats a 53-52 advantage. However, a pair of Claire Faucher free throws with 1:07 left gave the Vikings the lead for good.
“I didn’t think either team played very well on the offensive end,” said MSU head coach Tricia Binford. “In games decided by three points or less this season, we are 0-5 and that’s a mental hurdle we need to get over.”
Wallace paced the Bobcat attack with 11 points and a career-high 14 rebounds. Also in double-figures for MSU were Mercer 14, Nubia Garcia 12, and Alyssa Nelson 11.
For the game, Montana State shot 30 percent from the field and 62 percent from the free throw line. PSU connected for 40 percent from the floor.
The Bobcats held a commanding 48-35 advantage in rebounding. However, the Vikings forced 20 MSU turnovers and limited the Bobcats to 4-of-17 from three-point range.
For the second straight meeting, MSU did a good job on PSU’s leading scorer Kelsey Kahle. Kahle entered the contest averaging 18.9 points per game. She was held to five points, on 1-9 from the floor.
The Vikings were led in the victory by Janie Bos, who tallied 16 points and ten rebounds.
MSU will travel to Sacramento State on Wednesday for its first meeting with the Hornets.
