Sac State, Weber Win Big Sky Crowns Saturday

For Northern Arizona's amazing Lopez Lomong and the Weber State women's program, winning Big Sky Conference Indoor Track and Field titles is nothing new. For Sacramento State, it is.
Weber State won its fifth women's indoor championship in the past six years, and Lomong became the second man in conference history to win three individual titles in a meet Saturday at the 2007 Big Sky Conference Indoor Championships, one year after winning a pair of titles. Sacramento State's men grabbed their first Big Sky title ever in Bozeman on Saturday.
Dan Johnson of Livingston and Kylee Zent of Bridger highlighted Montana State's effort on Saturday. Johnson, a sophomore, became Montana State's first indoor sprint champion by capturing the 400 (48.44). Zent's 50-10.25 in the shot put stands as the second-best throw in MSU history and provisionally qualifies the sophomore for the NCAA Indoor Championships.
"We had some outstanding individual performances in this meet," Kennedy said. "The team results are disappointing, but Dan Johnson's championship and Kylee's huge performance were both outstanding. We had a lot of PRs, a lot of good performances."
Johnson said his 400 m title is more meaningful because the Livingston native won it at his hometown school. "Honestly, when I got in the blocks the first thing I thought was that I've worked too hard not to win this. I was thinking of all the really hard things I've done to get ready for this, the Kagy Hill sprints. I knew how much winning a Big Sky Championship would mean if I stayed in Bozeman for it."
For Lomong, the task of winning three titles wasn't physically overwhelming. "The 800 and the mile are more like getting my feet into a rhythm," he said. "It’s kind of bumpy a little bit, but I felt good. It was easy (physically), the mile and 800."

From Sacramento State Coach Kathleen Raske: "It is huge to win the first Big Sky title in the history of our program. It's been a long time coming. We've talked about it, that we were a big underdog. We were ranked sixth coming in, and to see it come to be is phenomenal. For that to happen we needed to have a perfect meet, and perfect meets don't come along very often. We were probably 99.5% perfect."
From Weber State Coach Jim Blaisdell: "We knew coming in there were four teams with a chance to win the Big Sky (women's championship). The Big Sky is such a great conference. We knew we would have an opportunity. There are ups and downs in every conference meet, and we had ups and downs. Idaho State made a heck of a run to make it that close. Championships are hard to come by, and you enjoy every one of them."
