Rudy Sails to Record Heights

Ellie Rudy knew it was coming.
"I knew when I was standing down there (on the runway), I was pretty sure I was going to make it," Rudy said of the moments preceding the best vault in Big Sky history. "If I think I’m going to make it I usually make it, and if I don’t think I’m going to I don’t. I was standing down there thinking, ‘I’m going to make this.’"
Rudy's winning vault of 14-feet is the second-best jump in the country this year. The sophomore from Woodland Park, Colo., said she'll use her success in the 2007 Big Sky Championships to boost her in her next meet, the NCAA Championships. "I wanted to jump 14-feet today," she said. "I knew if I could jump 14-feet today I could PR again at nationals."
Although Rudy is already established as the best collegiate jumper in Big Sky history, she can feel herself improving. "I’ve actually gotten better within the last couple of weeks, because things have clicked for me. Finally. After three years, things have clicked."
A big reason for that, Rudy said, is her mental frame of mind. "The confidence is there this week, and last week. Confidence is a huge thing. All week I was telling myself I was going to make 14-feet, there was no difference between me and anyone else that makes 14-feet."
Rudy's Big Sky Championship is her second indoor crown in as many years, but she said there is no sense of history. "I’m just totally enjoying the moment. I’m enjoying my time. I’m having the best time of my life."
