Rudy's Record Highlights Day One of Big Sky Meet

When Montana State pole vault coach Tom Eitel told long-time Bobcat head coach Dale Kennedy on Thursday that MSU sophomore Ellie Rudy was ready for a great meet in the 2007 Big Sky Conference Indoor Championships, Kennedy thought he might see something special on Friday.
What Rudy accomplished surpassed even Kennedy's expectations. The sophomore from Woodland Park, Colo., vaulted 14-feet to win her second straight Big Sky title. That mark set the all-time Big Sky record, and moved her into second place in NCAA Division I this year.
"That was the individual highlight for us, for sure," Kennedy said. "That was just amazing."
Rudy joined Sacramento State's Dave Nicholls in setting conference records on Friday, but Nicholls' mark was far more surprising. In his first competition of the year after nursing an injury to his throwing wrist for 10 weeks, Nicholls registered a toss of 62-3.25 to set an all-time conference record. "This is the hardest thing I’ve ever had to work for in my life, this meet," Nicholls said of overcoming his injury. "It was a great competition."
Idaho State's Brittany Rozier posted the best mark in the women's 55 and 200 meters, while Sacramento State's Jody Johnson moved to the 55 and 200 meter men's finals with the top marks in those events. MSU's Dan Johnson led Big Sky 400 qualifiers. Idaho State's Cassie Merkley won the pentathlon with the second-best mark in conference history at 3,847, the second-best score in league history.
Sacramento State's Caressa Sims won the women's weight throw with a toss of 62-0.25, but Kennedy was pleased with MSU's performance in the event. "That was a huge come-through by Karen Helvey (2nd, 59-10.5) and Ashley Jones (3rd, 59-2.75) and Lise Kilgore (7th, 52-0.5). We weren't supposed to get those points."
"It was a typical first day," Kennedy said, "a mixed bag, but more good than bad."

What Rudy accomplished surpassed even Kennedy's expectations. The sophomore from Woodland Park, Colo., vaulted 14-feet to win her second straight Big Sky title. That mark set the all-time Big Sky record, and moved her into second place in NCAA Division I this year.
"That was the individual highlight for us, for sure," Kennedy said. "That was just amazing."
Rudy joined Sacramento State's Dave Nicholls in setting conference records on Friday, but Nicholls' mark was far more surprising. In his first competition of the year after nursing an injury to his throwing wrist for 10 weeks, Nicholls registered a toss of 62-3.25 to set an all-time conference record. "This is the hardest thing I’ve ever had to work for in my life, this meet," Nicholls said of overcoming his injury. "It was a great competition."
Idaho State's Brittany Rozier posted the best mark in the women's 55 and 200 meters, while Sacramento State's Jody Johnson moved to the 55 and 200 meter men's finals with the top marks in those events. MSU's Dan Johnson led Big Sky 400 qualifiers. Idaho State's Cassie Merkley won the pentathlon with the second-best mark in conference history at 3,847, the second-best score in league history.
Sacramento State's Caressa Sims won the women's weight throw with a toss of 62-0.25, but Kennedy was pleased with MSU's performance in the event. "That was a huge come-through by Karen Helvey (2nd, 59-10.5) and Ashley Jones (3rd, 59-2.75) and Lise Kilgore (7th, 52-0.5). We weren't supposed to get those points."
"It was a typical first day," Kennedy said, "a mixed bag, but more good than bad."
