Bobcat Women Clinch Big Sky Berth With Win Over Bears

The MSU victory, coupled with an Eastern Washington loss to Idaho State, ends Montana State’s two-year drought from Big Sky Conference postseason play.
“We’re ecstatic,” said MSU second-year head coach Tricia Binford. “It was a goal of ours to get into the tournament. It also shows that our program is progressing. Obviously, there are still games to be played, but we’re very happy to earn a spot in the Big Sky Conference tournament.”
After a slow start that saw Northern Colorado jump out to an early 11-5 lead, Montana State (12-14, 7-7) responded with a 15-2 run to take a seven-point advantage following a Nubia Garcia layup with 9:25 remaining in the opening stanza.
MSU held a 36-20 lead at intermission.
In the second half, the Bobcats built their largest lead of the game at 70-33 following an Anne Phippard 3-pointer with 6:55 remaining.
“I thought we did very well in transition and Alyssa Nelson and Erica Perry both had outstanding games pushing the ball,” Binford said. “We got a lot of production from everyone.
“The one down-side was our slow start, and that’s the second game in a row where we haven’t been ready from the opening tip. That will be something we address on Friday,” Binford added.
Also in double-figures for the Bobcats was Nubia Garcia with 14 points.
All 11 Bobcat players scored and played between 10-27 minutes.
For the game, MSU shot 45 percent from the field, including 52 percent in the second half. The Bobcats also converted 7 3-pointers and went 8-of-11 from the free throw line.
Northern Colorado (5-21, 2-11) was led by Whitley Cox with 18 points and 15 rebounds.
MSU will play at Northern Arizona on Saturday at 2:05 p.m.
