Rudy Qualifies for NCAA Championships with Record Vault

Leading the field of stellar performances was pole vaulter Ellie Rudy, a junior from Woodland Park, Colordao, who vaulted her way to an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships in March. Rudy cleared 13’9.25 to break the indoor MSU Fieldhouse Record, the Big Sky Conference record, and register a personal best. Rudy made three attempts at 14’ and came close on her final attempt. Rudy also won the women’s high jump at 5’2.5”.
Three women registered season best marks in the 400 meters: Autumn Domitrovich (58.84), Fawn Kirkpatrick (59.72) and Lindsey Burrington (59.79). MSU women ran one-two-three in the mile with Kayla Larson running a season’s best 5:07.65 followed by Elisabeth Driscoll, also a season best mark at 5:09.91, and Ashley Hadway (5:11.90).
Women throwers continued to dominate with sophomore Kylee Zent winning the shot put with a 48’4” toss. Allison Jones was third (41’8”) and Amanda Stewart placed fourth (41’03.75”). In the weight throw, MSU placed one-two-three with Karen Helvey first with a season best of 59’0.25”. Ashley Jones threw second (55’7”) and Allison Jones was third at 54’7.25”
On the men’s side, junior Steve Heberly sprinted to a season best in the 55 at 6.50. Heberly also won the 400 with a time of 50.80. He was followed by teammate Scott Peterson at 51.37 and Mikel Erickson ran third at 52.22. Three Bobcat runners registered season best times in the mile led by senior Tony Bachman (4:21.22), followed by sophomore Matt Beamer (4:21.26) and sophomore Devin McDowell (4:22.80).
In the field events, Helena freshman Bobby Biskupiak won the pole vault with a personal record of 16’0.75”. Nick Morrow was second with a season’s best of 15’5”. Senior Tanner Rauk won the men’s shot put with a season best toss of 57’5.75”. Sophomore Pat Eckerson was the lone new qualifier for the conference championships in the men’s weight throw with an eighth place season’s best 53’3.5”.

Montana State hosts the Big Sky Conference Championships Feb. 23-24 at the Brick Breeden Fieldhouse. The men’s heptathlon opens the meet at 9:00 a.m. Friday. Field events begin at 1:30 p.m. on Friday. Defending women’s indoor conference champion is Northern Arizona. Defending men’s champion is Idaho State.
