After splitting the weekend games against Sacramento State and Montana, the ‘Cats land in a tie for fourth in the BSC with Idaho State. Their only game this week is a road trip to Sacramento, less than one week after the first meeting of the two teams in Bozeman. In the first meeting, the ‘Cats beat the Hornets 74-59 and were led in scoring by Casey Durham who scored 20 points on a hot 6-of-7 from three-point range.

MSU’s three-point percentage topped their regular field goal percentage in a wild display of three-point shooting against Sac State on Thursday. The ‘Cats made 12-of-19 three-pointers on the way to a 74-59 victory over the Hornets at home.
Montana’s hot shooting proved too much for the Bobcats on Saturday as they fell to Montana, 63-72. Despite having four players in double digits, the ‘Cats could not overcome Montana’s 67% shooting in the second half. MSU was led in scoring by Casey Durham with 14.

The ‘Cats return home for the weekend against Sac State and Idaho State. MSU came out on top in the first showdown with each this season. Currently, the Bobcats sit in a tie for fifth in the BSC with Portland State. MSU has five more conference games this season, including three at home.

Montana State sophomore Nubia Garcia recorded a game-high 18 points to lead four Bobcat players in double-figures, as MSU posted a 66-59 win over Sacramento State, Wednesday night in Hornet Gym. Also in double-digits for Montana State were Rebecca Mercer 12, Alyssa Nelson 12 and Krislyn Wallace 10. Wallace also added six rebounds for the Bobcats.
In spite of 17-point efforts by Rebecca Mercer and Whitney Connolly and a game defensive performance that limited Montana to 47% shooting, the Lady Griz beat MSU 84-70 in Missoula Sunday. Montana shot 50% in the first half, but the Bobcat defense tightened in the second. MSU held the Lady Griz to just 43% shooting in the second half, but Montana sealed the win late with superb free throw shooting, nailing 18-of-22. Connolly and Mercer scored 30 of MSU's 38 first-half points.
Indoor Track and Field
This Week:
Feb. 17 MSU hosts the Bobcat Open
The Bobcat track and field squad gets a break from the road for the next two weekends hosting the Bobcat Open Feb. 17 and the Big Sky Indoor Championships Feb. 23-24. Due to other events scheduled in the fieldhouse during the week, the Bobcat Open will be run on the flat track. The University of Montana and Dickinson State (North Dakota) are expected to compete in the event. So far this season, the ‘Cats have qualified 17 women’s track and field performances for the BSC Championships and 21 men’s performances.
Last Week:
The Bobcats traveled to Pocatello for the second straight weekend and posted 27 season’s best performances at the Mountain States Games. Leading the way was men’s sprinter Dan Johnson who won the 60 and 200 with lifetime best marks. Johnson also anchored the second place men’s 4 X 400 relay effort. Senior Jesse Allen won the weight throw with a toss of 58-4. On the women’s side, Ellie Rudy (pole vault), Karen Helvey (weight throw) and Kylee Zent (shot put) placed first in their respective events.

The Montana State ski team finished sixth at the University of New Mexico Invitational, Saturday afternoon. The Bobcats ended the invite with 394 points, one point behind Alaska-Anchorage. Denver captured the team title with a Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association record 592.5 points. MSU was led by its women’s Nordic squad on Saturday. Freshman Jamie Woelk placed second overall covering the five-kilometer course in 15:23.6. Sophomore Claire Rennie and senior Mandy Bowden finished sixth and seventh, respectively. The MSU men were paced in the 10K race by Chris Coe, who placed 20th in a time of 29:13.7. He was followed by Nathan Park, 22nd, 21:49.1; and Tim Downey, 24th, 29:44.0. In the women’s slalom event, the Bobcats were led by freshman Amy Lattimer, who finished 15th with a time-run total of 1:49.32. MSU All-America standout Spela Bertoncelj was 16th in 1:49.40. The men’s alpine squad was guided by freshman Toby Lamar, who placed 17th overall in 1:44.59.Lamar was followed by Cory Harris, 19th, and Andre Hokholt, 22nd.

Bobcat golfers open their spring season at UC-Riverside Monday and Tuesday. Sixteen teams comprise the tough field including conference foe Sacramento State. The young ‘Cat squad includes juniors Kelly Gillum, Kate Steffanich, Stephanie Simmons, sophomores Shannon Donnegan, Hilary Folkvord, LaRae Smith, Tessa Stevenson, and freshman redshirt Elise Nelsen.

The Montana State men’s tennis dropped a 5-2 decision to Air Force, Saturday afternoon. The Bobcats received victories at No. 1 singles, where Kyle McDonald knocked off Robby Alexander 6-3, 6-1. Also posting a win was Anton Leonenko at No. 5. The freshman posted a 3-6, 6-2, 10-7 win over Austin Francis. At No. 4 singles, MSU’s Justin Hauck lost a hard-fought three set decision to AFA’s Keith Cronican 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (4). The Falcons won the opening point of the match, taking two-of-three doubles contests. MSU’s No. 1 tandem of McDonald and Jakob Dybala posted an 8-2 win, while Zach Buenger and Leonenko dropped a close 9-8 (4) decision at No. 2. The Bobcat’s No. 3 combination of Myles Perkins and Hauck were downed 8-2 by Cronican and James Tomlin.

The University of Idaho women’s tennis team held on for a 4-3 victory over Montana State, Friday evening in the Kibbie Dome. The Vandals captured the opening point, sweeping all three doubles matches. In singles action, Montana State won at Nos. 4, 5 and 6, but dropped hard-fought decisions at Nos. 1 and 3- in three sets. Freshmen Ali Griffin and Laura Villegas notched wins at No. 4 and 5 singles. Griffin won in three sets over Lauren Drew at the fourth spot, while Villegas posted a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Lauren Shrubb at No.5. Sophomore McKenzie Hilmer also recorded a victory with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles over Carolyn Berry. The women dropped a 0-7 decision to Washington on Saturday.
