“The kids did what we asked of them and I couldn’t be prouder,” said MSU second-year head coach Tricia Binford. “We took care of business. I felt we were in control the entire game.”
Connolly connected on five-of-10 from the field and was 5-of-5 from the free throw line. In addition, the Ennis native added two assists, a block and a steal.
Also reaching double-figures for Montana State (9-11, 4-4) were Rebecca Mercer and Alyssa Nelson with 12 points, apiece.
“Penetration was a key,” Binford said. “I thought Rebecca Mercer got us off to a great start and the rest of the kids fed off her example.”
MSU scored the first basket of the game on a Nelson layup and never trailed Eastern Washington (7-15, 2-7) the rest of the way.
The Bobcats built a 29-20 lead in the opening period on a Krislyn Wallace basket at the 4:56 mark. MSU entered intermission with a 32-27 advantage.
Montana State opened the second stanza with a 15-4 run to stake a 47-31 margin with 14:36 left following a Nelson layin. The Bobcats took their largest lead of the game with 2:59 remaining on an Erica Perry free throw.
EWU was led in the loss by freshman Nicole Scott with a game-high 23 points.
For the game, Montana State shot 47 percent from the field, while holding Eastern Washington to 31 percent. MSU also shot 89 percent from the free throw line, converting 24-27 charity tosses.
The Bobcats will play at Portland State on Saturday afternoon.
