Bobcat Women Knock off Previously Unbeaten Utah Valley

“Holding a very good offensive team to 69 points is a great accomplishment for our kids,” said MSU third-year head coach Tricia Binford. “Utah Valley was undefeated and was receiving votes in the top 25. It feels good to get back on the winning side.”
Mercer, a senior from Perth, Australia, connected on 11-of-21 from the field, including four 3-pointers. She also pulled down five rebounds and added two assists.
The opening period featured eight ties with the largest lead of the half belonging to Montana State (3-4) at 18-13 with 10:51 remaining following a Sarah Strand layin.
Montana State held a 38-37 advantage at intermission.
Utah Valley (8-1) opened the second stanza with seven unanswered points to take its largest lead of the game at 44-38 at the 16:16 mark on a basket by Sandy Marvin.
The Wolverines held the lead until an Erica Perry jumper at the 8:24 mark gave the Bobcats the lead for good. MSU converted nine-of-ten free throws in the final three minutes to put the game away.
“Everyone gets credit for the win,” Binford said. “Our post defense did a great job on (Robyn) Fairbanks and we did a nice job under the boards.”
Fairbanks, who entered the game averaging 22.9 points per game, was held to 17 points. Last year, Fairbanks notched 43 points in Utah Valley’s win over the Bobcats.
Also scoring in double-figures for Montana State was Strand with 12 points. Senior Krislyn Wallace ended the game with nine points and a game-high 11 rebounds, while Perry finished with nine points, five assists and three steals.
Binford also noted the play of Bobcat post-player Jamie Thornton. “Jamie’s gained a lot of confidence over the last few weeks. We’ve played some excellent teams and she is rising to the occasion. She did a great job shooting and defending in the post.”
Montana State will host Denver on Dec. 15.
