Bobcat Women Host Utah Valley

The Montana State women’s basketball team returns to the friendly confines of Worthington Arena after playing its last four games on the road. The Bobcats have played five-of-six away from home this season. In addition, Montana State will look to snap its current four-game losing streak. In order to stop the streak, the Bobcats will face undefeated Utah Valley on Wednesday evening. The Wolverines are 8-0 on the season and are coming off two victories, last weekend, against Ohio and Air Force. Utah Valley is led by Robyn Fairbanks, a 6-1 junior post-player from Raymond, Alberta, who averges 22.9 points and 9.0 rebounds per game. In addition, she shoots 56 percent from the field and 71 percent from the line. Balancing out the UVU attack is guard Sandy Marvin, who is pouring in 20 points per contest. As a team, Utah Valley is putting up a whopping 86.1 points per game. MSU will look to continue its hot offensive showing from last Sunday vs. Drake. The Bobcats shot 55 percent from the field, including 59 percent in the second stanza. Four MSU players posted double-figures.

Despite shooting a season-high 55 percent from the field, and holding a 29-27 advantage in field goals and a 7-4 margin from beyond the 3-point line...the Bobcats dropped their fourth straight game to Drake on Sunday...MSU has opened the season playing five-of-six games on the road, including four consecutive away from Worthington Arena...The Bobcats will host undefeated Utah Valley (8-0) on Wednesday...Freshman Sarah Strand didn’t let 9,968 hostile fans intimidate her, as she led the Bobcats with a team-high 14 points at Iowa State...Lyndi Seidensticker, another MSU frosh came off the bench to record nine points on 3-of-6 from the floor...Bobcat senior Rebecca Mercer and Krislyn Wallace are off to strong starts for Montana State...Mercer and Wallace average 13.8 and 12.2 points, respectively....Against Drake on Sunday afternoon, the due each totaled a team-high 16 points.
The Week That Was:
The Bobcats dropped a pair of games in Iowa last weekend, losing to perennial Big 12 power Iowa State (76-50) and Drake (80-68). MSU got caught in the ice storm that descended upon the greater Des Moines area. The Bobcats were forced to spend an extra night in Ames as I-35 was closed down. Against ISU, a pair of freshmen paced the Bobcats. Sarah Strand posted a team-high 14 points on six-of-11 from the field. Lyndi Seidensticker came off the bench to add nine points, including a three-of-six effort from the floor. Four Bobcats players hit double-digits at Drake, led by Krislyn Wallace 16, Rebecca Mercer 16, Erica Perry 14 and Strand 11. MSU shot 55 percent.
M*A*S*H 4077th:
Montana State has been hit with the injury bug in the early going this fall. Starting forward Nubia Garcia will be out of action for 2-4 weeks with a broken collarbone suffered in practice two weeks ago. Garcia averaged 9.9 points and 7.0 rebounds, last season. Rebecca Mercer and Jenny Heringer are also bouncing back from injury and not at a full 100 percent.
Turnin’ It Around:
Montana State had the 11th best turnaround in the nation at the NCAA Division I level, last year. MSU improved 8.5 games from its 3-23 mark during the 2005-06 campaign. The Bobcats finished 13-16 last season.
Smart Cookies:
As a team, MSU ranked 4th in the country, academically speaking. The Bobcats had a cumulative team grade-point average of 3.56 and ranked among the WBCA’s top five for the second straight season. MSU had a Big Sky Conference record 11 players on the league’s all-academic list last spring.
Toe The Line:
As a team, Montana State shot 72 percent from the free throw line during the 2006-07 season. Three Bobcats ranked among the Big Sky’s top ten in free throw percentage. Rebecca Mercer led the Big Sky shooting 92 percent, while Nubia Garcia was 9th (.776) and Alyssa Nelson 10th (.763). During the season, Mercer had a stretch of 23 consecutive makes. Currently, the Bobcats are shooting 71 percent from the charity line, with Krislyn Wallace leading the way at 79 percent.
To Catch a Thief:
As a team, the Bobcats lead the Big Sky Conference in steals, averaging 9.83 thefts per game. Sophomore Erica Perry paces the team and the Big Sky Conference, averaging 3.67 steals per game.
Player of the Week:
Perry averaged 11 points, five rebounds, 3.5 assists and three steals as the Bobcats dropped a pair of road games in Iowa. Perry recorded a career-high seven rebounds against Drake, while adding a game-high six assists. Perry, who leads the Big Sky in steals, notched six thefts on the weekend, including four at Big 12 power Iowa State. For the weekend, she shot a whopping 63 percent from the field. Perry’s current .513 field goal percentage is tops in the Big Sky. She is also listed eighth in assists and 26th in scoring. If Perry continues her pace of 3.6 steals per game, she’ll post 101 steals, which would be fourth on MSU’s single-season list.
Da Wonder From Down Under:
Senior Rebecca Mercer is off to another strong start for the Bobcats. She currently leads the team in scoring (13.8) and is second in assists (2.3). In six games to date, she has been in double-digit scoring on four occasion, including a season-high 21 points against Idaho in the season-opener. Mercer was the 2006-07 Big Sky Conference Newcomer of the Year. Her current career scoring average of 12.6 points per game ranks among the top 15 all-time at Montana State.
The Hooper Hoopster:
Senior Krislyn Wallace, a 6-1 forward from Hooper, Utah is one of two MSU captains this winter. Wallace is second on the squad in scoring (12.2 ppg). She paces the Bobcats under the glass, averaging 6.2 rebounds per game. Wallace’s current 6.8 career rebounds per game average is 6th all-time at MSU. She posted a season-high 19 points at Denver. Wallace transferred to MSU from Eastern Utah as a junior.

Montana State signed a pair of high school standouts during the early signing period. Rachel Pauli, 6-1 guard, of Big Timber and Katie Bussey, 5-9 guard, of Alamosa, Colorado have inked to play for the Bobcats next season. As a juniors, Pauli averaged 10.6 points and 7.3 rebounds per game, while Bussey poured in 13.7 points per contest.
