Bobcat Women to Play Two in North Dakota

The Montana State women’s basketball team will resume non-conference action this weekend as they travel to North Dakota. Prior to the holiday break, the Bobcats dropped an 82-68 decision to Gonzaga inside the friendly confines of Worthington Arena. Montana State is currently 5-5 overall and have won three of its last four outings. The University of North Dakota is 12-0 and ranked No. 1 in the NCAA Division II polls. Gene Roebuck is in his 21st season with the Fighting Sioux and has posted an impressive 542-89 overall mark, including three NCAA Division II National Championships. This season, UND has been paced by Ashley Langen and Kierah Kimbrough, who average 15.5 and 14.6 points, respectively. MSU and UND have played one like opponent this season, both posting victories over MSU-Billings. North Dakota State is 5-6 overall. The Bison are members of the Summit League, which is in its first season as a ten member conference. Amy Ruley is in her 29th season in Fargo and has registered an impressive 659-193 overall mark, including five NCAA Division II National Championships. This winter, the Bison are paced by Lisa Bue and Brenda Slyt, who average 16.6 and 14.2 points, respectively.

Montana State is 5-5 overall, 3-1 at home, 2-4 on the road...The Bobcats are shooting 44 percent as a team, its highest mark since the 2002-03 WNIT shot 44 percent from the floor...MSU is second in the Big Sky Conference in attendance, averaging 3089 fans per game...Rebecca Mercer is fifth in the Big Sky in scoring, averaging 15.7 points per game...Erica Perry is first in steals, third in field-goal percentage and sixth in assists...True freshman Sarah Strand has made an impact in the first ten games, as the Seattle native ranks second in blocks, sixth in field-gola percentage, tenth in 3-point field-goal percentage, 15th in scoring and 15th in 3-point makes, among Big Sky Conference players...Montana State’s 16 steals in the season-opener against Idaho remains the top mark in the league, as does it’s .625 (10-16) shooting night from beyond the three-point arc against Denver.

The Bobcats dropped their only game prior to the Christmas break in an 82-68 decision to Gonzaga on Dec. 21 in Worthington Arena. Senior Krislyn Wallace posted a career-high 24 points against the Bulldogs, connecting on nine-of-14 from the field. In addition, Wallace added seven rebounds and a steal. Also in double-figures for the Bobcats were Rebecca Mercer 12 and Erica Perry 11. Perry also posted a game-high five steals. MSU freshman Sarah Strand chipped in nine points and seven boards in the loss. For the game, MSU shot 39 percent from the floor, but converted just one-of-10 from three-point range. Gonzaga hit 49 percent from the floor and was 7-of-23 from beyond the arc. The ‘Zags held a 39-35 margin under the boards.
M*A*S*H 4077th:
With Nubia Garcia back in the line-up after sitting out the first seven games with a broken collarbone, only Rebecca Mercer and Jenny Heringer are under the weather and not at a full 100 percent.
Turnin’ It Around:
Montana State had the 11th best turnaround in the nation at the NCAA Division I level, last year. MSU improved 8.5 games from its 3-23 mark during the 2005-06 campaign. The Bobcats finished 13-16 last season.
Smart Cookies:
As a team, MSU ranked 4th in the country, academically speaking. The Bobcats had a cumulative team grade-point average of 3.56 and ranked among the WBCA’s top five for the second straight season. MSU had a Big Sky Conference record 11 players on the league’s all-academic list last spring.
Toe The Line:
As a team, Montana State shot 72 percent from the free throw line during the 2006-07 season. Three Bobcats ranked among the Big Sky’s top ten in free throw percentage. Rebecca Mercer led the Big Sky shooting 92 percent, while Nubia Garcia was 9th (.776) and Alyssa Nelson 10th (.763). During the season, Mercer had a stretch of 23 consecutive makes. Currently, the Bobcats are shooting 70 percent from the charity line, with Krislyn Wallace leading the way at 78 percent.
To Catch a Thief:
As a team, the Bobcats lead the Big Sky Conference in steals, averaging 9.20 thefts per game. Sophomore Erica Perry paces the team and the Big Sky Conference, averaging 3.20 steals per game. Perry, a native of Lynwood, Calif., is ranked 20th in the nation in steals per game.
MSU Player of the Week:
Krislyn Wallace was named Montana State’s Player of the Week for her effort against Gonzaga. The 6-foot-1 forward from Hooper, Utah, recorded a career-high 24 points, connecting on nine-of-14 from the field and six-of-eight from the free throw line. Wallace also pulled down a team-high seven rebounds in the loss. She also posted a steal in 26 minutes of action. On the season, Wallace is averaging 12.7 points per game, which is second best on the Montana State squad. Her 6.2 rebounds per contest leads the Bobcat team. Wallace is currently shooting 45 percent from the field and 78 percent from the free throw line.
Da Wonder From Down Under:
Senior Rebecca Mercer is off to another strong start for the Bobcats. She currently leads the team in scoring (15.7) and is second in assists (2.2). In ten games to date, she has been in double-digit scoring on eight occasions, including a career-high 30 points against Utah Valley. Mercer was the 2006-07 Big Sky Conference Newcomer of the Year. Her current career scoring average of 13.2 points per game ranks among the top 15 all-time at Montana State.
The Hooper Hoopster:
Senior Krislyn Wallace, a 6-1 forward from Hooper, Utah is one of two MSU captains this winter. Wallace is second on the squad in scoring (12.7 ppg). She paces the Bobcats under the glass, averaging 6.2 rebounds per game. Wallace’s current 6.9 career rebounds per game average is 5th all-time at MSU. She posted a season-high 24 points against Gonzaga. Wallace, a 6-foot-1 junior, transferred to MSU from Eastern Utah.
Diaper Dandies:
Montana State has a pair of true-freshmen making significant contributions to the Bobcat squad. Sarah Strand, a graduate of King’s High School in the Seattle area, has started all ten games and is averaging 11.4 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. In addition, she is first on the team in blocked shots. Lyndi Seidensticker, a graduate of Lewis and Clark High School in Spokane is averaging 13.1 minutes per game. She is averaging 4.8 points and 2.6 rebounds on the season.
Montana Ink:
Montana State signed a pair of high school standouts during the early signing period. Rachel Pauli, 6-1 guard, of Big Timber and Katie Bussey, 5-9 guard, of Alamosa, Colo., have inked to play for the Bobcats next season. As a juniors, Pauli averaged 10.6 points and 7.3 rebounds per game, while Bussey poured in 13.7 points per contest.

The Bobcats have a distain for the number 68, as three of the squads five losses have come when MSU has scored 68 points- Gonzaga, Denver and Drake.
