Trailing by 25 points with 11:05 remaining in the game, the Montana State (5-5) women’s basketball team closed the margin to 65-57 at the 5:56 mark on a Krislyn Wallace jumper, but could get no closer.
Wallace, a senior from Hooper, Utah, paced the Bobcats with a career-high 24 points, including a nine-of-14 performance from the field. She also added a team-high seven rebounds.
“I’m proud of the effort our kids made to get back into the game,” said MSU third-year coach Tricia Binford. “We just ran out of steam. Gonzaga was very physical and we were unsettled and took off-balance shots.”
Gonzaga (7-5) jumped out to an early 14-7 lead and took a 34-25 advantage into intermission. The Bulldogs opened the second stanza with a 7-2 run to take a 14-point margin.
Also in double-digits for the Bobcats were Rebecca Mercer 12 and Erica Perry 11. Mercer connected on 8-of-9 from the free throw line, while Perry added a game-high five steals.
MSU finished the game shooting 39 percent from the field, but hit just one-of-10 3-point attempts.
MSU will play at North Dakota on Dec. 28.
