Arizona State used Jeff Pendergraph's hot hand and 21 Bobcat turnovers to post a 66-62 come-from-behind win over the Bobcats in Tempe on Tuesday.
The Sun Devils' 6-9 junior forward scored 16 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to pace 8-2 Arizona State past MSU. ASU's aggressive zone defense also forced 21 Bobcat turnovers, but MSU countered with red-hot three-point shooting. Led by Casey Durham's five treys, the Cats nailed 14 triples, one short of the school record.
"We took 24 threes," said Bobcat coach Brad Huse, "but you're going to shoot a lot of threes against that zone. There are different kinds of three-pointers. We took the kind of shots that college basketball players should make, and our guys made them."
The game stayed close throughout. Montana State led by as many as nine points in the first half, and held a 28-27 edge at halftime. After Divaldo Mbunga extended that lead with a layup early in the second half, the Sun Devils used an 11-3 run to reclaim control of the game.
With the Bobcats trailing 42-36 with 13:30 to play, Carlos Taylor drained a three-pointer then nailed three free throws - more than one-quarter of the team's charity tosses for the evening - to pull the Bobcats into a tie. The Sun Devils spurted ahead 54-47 with nine minutes to play, but the Bobcats rallied to take a 58-57 lead on Taylor's three-pointer with just over four minutes remaining. Durham then nailed a three after the media time out to give the Cats a 61-57 margin.
"Give our guys credit," Huse said. "They fought really hard, and they gave themselves a chance down the stretch."
After a Pendergraph layup and a Ty Abbott free throw at 2:46, Abbott missed a free throw and Pendergraph snagged the rebound. Pendergraph hit a short jumper to give the Sun Devils the lead for good at 62-61.
Freshman Bobby Howard led the Bobcats with 16 points on 6-for-8 shooting, including 3-for-4 from beyond the arc, while Durham and Taylor each scored 15 points and combined to hit nine of the team's 14 three-pointers. The Bobcats shot 51% from the field, and a scorching 58% on 14-for-24 shooting from three-point range. ASU become only the second team to out-rebound MSU on the season, holding a narrow 30-to-29 margin, while the Devils shot 49% from the field.
Montana State returns home to face Great Falls on Friday at 5:30 pm. The game is slated as the first contest of a men's-women's doubleheader, with the MSU women hosting Gonzaga at 8 pm.
