Blue and Gold Meet Produces Lifetime Bests

The traditional kick off to the indoor track and field season produced some surprises and some excitement for head coach Dale Kennedy.
“We had several kids with personal bests and that was exciting,” head coach Dale Kennedy said. “Dan Jonson had a lifetime best in both the 200 and the 400. I think he’s ready to really step it up this year.”
On the men’s side, some new faces emerged in the sea of familiar names. Freshman Asa Staven from Georgetown, Texas won the long jump, his first time in the event. Staven also tied with Charlie Hirning in the high jump at the height of 6’6”, and placed third behind seniors Dan Johnson and Steve Heberly in the 55. Johnson won the 55 at 6.50.
“I think Asa Staven’s name is one we’re going to hear for a long time to come,” Kennedy said. “He’s training for the decathlon and we have high hopes for him.”
Seniors Blake Corneliusen and Nate Palmer won the shot put and 35-weight respectively. Palmer was a 2007 Big Sky All-Conference performer in the event, placing third at last year’s conference indoor meet in Bozeman. Junior Dan Van Swearingen won the indoor javelin with a heave of 205’ and last year’s conference outdoor champ in the event, Nick Lam, placed third.
On the women’s side, sophomore Alli Jones showed she’s ready to take up where she left off last year winning the shot put with a lifetime best throw of 46’5”. As a freshman, Jones was fourth in the event at the conference indoor meet with a throw of 45’9”. Former MSU basketball player Amanda DeHaan paced the 55 hurdles with a time of 8.51. Junior Autumn Domitrovich won all three sprint events. Kennedy also expressed high hopes for senior Kelsey Cooley, a transfer from Seattle Pacific, who is a two-time All-American in the heptathlon.
